From the environment into the biomass: microplastic uptake in a protected lamprey species

Flora Rendell-Bhatti et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of microplastics in a threatened lamprey species and its habitat, comparing protected and unprotected areas. Microplastic particles were found in both lamprey larvae and sediment samples, with the highest abundance in the most urbanized catchment. The study also suggests that the abundance of microplastics in lamprey is not correlated with that in sediment.

Polyamide microplastics in wastewater as vectors of cationic pharmaceutical drugs

Antony Wagstaff et al.

Summary: The study found that more hydrophobic pharmaceuticals adsorb significantly to polyamide microplastics in wastewater, while hydrophilic pharmaceuticals have low adsorption and limited desorption. Microplastics may transport adsorbed pharmaceuticals for considerable distances after discharge, serving as a vector of pharmaceutical drugs from wastewater treatment plants to aquatic organisms. The desorption rates vary in simulated gastric fluids and different temperatures.

Adsorption of cyanotoxins on polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate: Microplastics as vector of eight microcystin analogues

Diana S. Moura et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the potential role of microplastics as carriers of microcystins in freshwater environments. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of microplastics for microcystins is influenced by factors such as the hydrophobicity of the toxins, the type of plastic, and the particle size.

Effects of microplastics of different sizes on the Chlorella vulgaris- Ganoderma lucidum co-pellets formation processes

Xinye Gong et al.

Summary: The effects of different sized microplastics on the formation process of algal-fungal co-pellets were investigated. The results showed that microplastics with a size of 5.000 pm had the highest biomass recovery and the lowest Fv/Fm ratio. Microplastics adhered evenly to the mycelia of Ganoderma lucidum, and the size of microplastics affected the contact angle and crystallinity index. Furthermore, the addition of 5.000 pm microplastics promoted the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and enzyme activity in the co-pellets.

Comparison of adsorption and desorption of triclosan between microplastics and soil particles

Xian Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that polyethylene (PE) had the highest adsorption rate and equilibrium capacity for triclosan (TCS), while soil and polystyrene (PS) were similar. The addition of PE increased TCS sorption in soil, while PS had no significant influence.

Sorption of pharmaceuticals on the surface of microplastics

Alan Puckowski et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics have a complex nature of sorption on pharmaceuticals, including both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions. The ionic strength of the medium was identified as a significant factor influencing the sorption potential in common conditions of the natural environment.

Jianing Hui et al.

Summary: This study introduces a facile method to coat g-C3N4 onto porous glass beads, producing a highly efficient photocatalyst for the removal of organic pollutants and cyanobacterial toxins in water reservoirs. Through recycling experiments, the coated layer is proven to be highly stable and regenerative.

Potentially Poisonous Plastic Particles: Microplastics as a Vector for Cyanobacterial Toxins Microcystin-LR and Microcystin-LF

Carlos J. Pestana et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the potential of microplastics to act as carriers for microcystins, achieving toxin concentration 28 times higher on plastic than in water. The experimental results show that adsorption of microcystins onto microplastics is a multifactorial process, dependent on various factors. The study also stresses the limitations of exclusively investigating microcystin-LR.

Size-dependent toxic effects of polystyrene microplastic exposure on Microcystis aeruginosa growth and microcystin production

Di Wu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that 1 μm polystyrene microplastics have a greater impact on freshwater cyanobacteria compared to 100 nm microplastics, promoting algal growth and inhibiting photosynthesis. Additionally, 1 μm microplastics increase intracellular microcystins content and inhibit their release, while 100 nm microplastics only promote microcystin production.

Size-dependent chronic toxicity of fragmented polyethylene microplastics to Daphnia magna

Dahee An et al.

Summary: The chronic toxicity of fragmented microplastics (MPs) on Daphnia magna was higher compared to MP beads, leading to reduced feeding, survival rate, body length, and offspring in the exposed organisms. Further studies are needed to understand the underlying toxicity mechanisms and potential ecological risks posed by MP fragmentation.
