Maize plant (Zea mays) uptake of organophosphorus and novel brominated flame retardants from hydroponic cultures

Tiziano Bonato et al.

Summary: The study assessed the root uptake and root-shoot translocation of organophosphorus and brominated flame retardants in maize plants. Higher concentrations of the flame retardants were found to be phytotoxic and resulted in decreased shoot dry weight. The results showed linear relationships between chemical concentrations in plant parts and hydroponic concentrations.

Commentary: Assessing the endocrine disrupting effects of chemicals on invertebrates in the European Union

Mark Crane et al.

Summary: Evidence from both laboratory and field studies has shown that both synthetic and naturally occurring chemicals may disrupt invertebrate endocrine systems. However, the impact of this disruption on field populations is still unclear. The regulation of potential endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is currently hindered by a lack of knowledge about invertebrate endocrinology and the uncertainty in making regulatory decisions. This commentary proposes a roadmap for regulating potential EDCs in invertebrates by utilizing the Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) concept and focusing on identifying Molecular Initiating Events (MIEs) within AOPs.

Identification of combinations of endocrine disrupting chemicals in household chemical products that require mixture toxicity testing

Inhye Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that common household chemical products contain a variety of chemicals that disrupt the endocrine system. Cleaning products, detergents, fabric softeners, air fresheners, and deodorants are hotspots for these chemicals, with fragrances and preservatives being the most prevalent endocrine disruptors.

Acute toxicity characterization of organic UV-filters and chronic exposure revealing multigenerational effects in DAPHNIA MAGNA

Vinicius de C. S. de Paula et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the acute toxicity of organic ultraviolet filters on aquatic organisms and investigated the multigenerational effects on Daphnia magna. The results showed that some UV filters had acute toxic effects and could potentially harm the life cycle of D. magna even at environmentally relevant concentrations.

Transcriptomic responses to cytotoxic drug cisplatin in water flea Daphnia magna

Jingya Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential toxic mechanism of cisplatin, a cytotoxic drug, on a model water flea. The results reveal that exposure to cisplatin significantly reduces the offspring number, delays pregnancy, and decreases body length in Daphnia magna. Transcriptome analysis shows that differentially expressed genes are primarily enriched in digestion and absorption, nerve conduction, endocrine interference, and circulatory related pathways. The down-regulation of digestive secretion and nutrient absorption may impede energy supply, hinder growth and reproduction, and affect ovarian development and cell growth. In addition, the reduced expression of genes in cardiomyocyte contraction and apoptosome processes may contribute to the death of Daphnia magna.

Chemical pollution: A growing peril and potential catastrophic risk to humanity

Ravi Naidu et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic chemical pollution has the potential to threaten humanity's environmental health significantly; however, global understanding of this issue remains fragmented. There are serious gaps in our understanding of the scale of the threat and the risks posed by the dispersal, mixture, and recombination of chemicals in the wider environment. Despite the existence of pollution control measures, they are often not being implemented at the necessary rate to prevent chronic and acute effects on human health.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Preeti Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency caused by the unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products. The presence of various organic compounds in the environment, including antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, poses serious health risks to humans. Research needs to focus on discussing the sources of antibiotic resistance and the ecotoxicity risks in the environment.

Organic pollutants in protected plain areas: The occurrence of PAHs, musks, UV-filters, flame retardants and hydrocarbons in woodland soils

Marco Vecchiato et al.

Summary: Research shows that protected woodland soils in northern Italy contain various organic pollutants, including PAHs, Musk fragrances, UV filters, organophosphorus, and brominated Flame Retardants. The floodplains of the Po, Adige, and Fratta rivers are more contaminated, with higher levels of pollutants such as PAHs and personal care products.

Marco Picone et al.

Summary: The study revealed that commercial fragrance materials may have toxic effects on the larval development of marine copepods, with HEX, AMY, and ORA showing higher toxicity compared to PEO, BZS, and AMB. Fragrance materials, especially HEX and AMY, may act as contaminants of potential concern in various aquatic habitats.
