Formation of Catalytic Hotspots in ATP-Templated Assemblies

Krishnendu Das et al.

Summary: This article describes a self-assembly of surfactant-based structures that rely on a combination of a thermodynamically controlled and a dissipative pathway for their formation. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) acts as a high-affinity template and triggers the formation of assemblies at low surfactant concentrations. The presence of these assemblies allows for the activation of a dissipative self-assembly process by a weak-affinity substrate. The induced recruitment of additional surfactants by the substrate leads to the spontaneous formation of catalytic hotspots in the ATP-stabilized assemblies, resulting in substrate cleavage. Catalysis can be observed at a surfactant concentration where low catalytic activity is observed in the absence of ATP.

Nanoparticle protein corona: from structure and function to therapeutic targeting

Ghazal Bashiri et al.

Summary: Nanoparticle (NP)-based therapeutics have revolutionized translational medicine, but the mechanisms by which NPs interact and evolve in biological environments remain poorly understood. When exposed to physiological fluids, NPs are encased in a protein corona (PC) that can profoundly impact their behavior. The conformation and orientation of proteins in vivo can be influenced by biological factors and interactions with NPs, potentially altering their function. This review explores the effects of PC on protein conformation and discusses how this knowledge can be leveraged for therapeutic purposes.

Self-Regulatory Micro- and Macroscale Patterning of ATP-Mediated Nanobioconjugate

Ekta Shandilya et al.

Summary: Directional interactions and the assembly of a nanobioconjugate in clusters at a specific location are important for patterning and microarrays in biomedical research. In this study, we demonstrate that surface patterning of surfactant-functionalized nanoparticles can be controlled through synergistic enzyme-substrate-nanoparticle affinity and the phoretic effect. We show the modulation of aggregation of cationic gold nanoparticles by multivalent anionic nanoparticle binding and the introduction of an enzyme gradient, as well as the surface deposition pattern via the coffee ring effect. Additionally, we observe changes in capillary phoresis parameters due to the introduction of ATP-loaded nanoparticles, which has implications for disease diagnostics.

Nonorthogonal Cascade Catalysis in Multicompartment Micelles

Eman Ahmed et al.

Summary: Multicompartment micelles (MCMs) containing acid and base sites in discrete domains were prepared from poly(norbornene)-based amphiphilic bottlebrush copolymers in water. Acid and base sites were localized in different compartments, enabling a nonorthogonal reaction sequence. Computational simulations using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) determined the composition required for effective site-isolation of catalysts. This study presents MCMs as a new class of nanostructures for one-pot multistep nonorthogonal cascade catalysis in water, providing a foundation for isolating incompatible catalysts.

Vanadium Catalyst in Micelles: Toward a Greener Aerobic Oxidative Cleavage of Vicinal Diols in Water

Romain Carpentier et al.

Summary: The catalytic aerobic oxidative cleavage of vicinal diols can be achieved in water using a recyclable micellar medium with a vanadium aminotriphenolate complex. Water micellar media offer a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to organic solvents in synthesis. The incorporation of the vanadium aminotriphenolate complex in zwitterionic dodecyl phosphocholine (DPC) and mixed TPGS-750-M:DPC micelles resulted in efficient carbonyl derivative formation without overoxidation, even with low catalyst loading and high TONs. The mixed micelles, combining the stability of DPC and extraction properties of TPGS-750-M, can be recycled and achieve full conversion with catalyst and substrate reloading. The reactivity of substrates in micelles depends not only on their lipophilicity but also on the ease of access to the catalyst and its location in the micellar phase, as revealed by DOSY experiments.

Aqueous micellar technology: an alternative beyond organic solvents

Gaspard Hedouin et al.

Summary: Solvents are a major source of chemical waste, and there is a growing demand for more environmentally friendly alternatives. While water can sometimes be a suitable substitute for organic solvents, its use as a sole solvent is impractical. However, recent advancements in additives have allowed for chemistry in water, including the use of micelles as nanoreactors. Micellar technology has proven to be a sustainable alternative for many reactions, with potential beyond serving as a reaction medium.

Tharique N. Ansari et al.

Summary: In the last few decades, cross-coupling approaches using palladium as a catalyst have been widely used for efficient generation of structural diversity. However, traditional practices in organic synthesis have been found to be inefficient due to the use of organic solvents. Using water as a reaction medium along with non-ionic surfactants provides a sustainable alternative, reducing the reliance on toxic organic solvents. This review discusses recent advances in micellar catalysis applied to palladium-mediated cross-couplings, as well as future directions and challenges.
