The functional importance of bacterial oxidative phosphonate pathways

Katharina Pallitsch et al.

Summary: Organophosphonates (Pns) are natural products with a stable C-P bond, exhibiting diverse structures and bioactivities. The metabolism of Pns involves oxidative enzymes, particularly iron-dependent oxygenases and oxidases, which contribute to Pns structural diversity and breakdown. Understanding the importance and mechanisms of these enzymes in microbial Pn metabolism is crucial for early diversification and late-stage functionalization of complex Pns.

Asymmetric synthesis of organophosphorus compounds using H-P reagents derived from chiral alcohols

Joseph D. Gbubele et al.

Summary: Chiral organophosphorus compounds, especially those with C-stereogenic carbons near the phosphorus atom, have unique properties and wide applications. Recent advances focus on highly stereoselective formation of C- and in some cases P-stereogenic organophosphorus compounds using H-P reagents bearing chiral auxiliaries. Reactions with different partners lead to structurally diverse chiral organophosphorus compounds with up to five chiral centers, influenced by the type of chiral alcohol attached to the phosphorus atom.
