Nanoparticle Self-Assembly: From Design Principles to Complex Matter to Functional Materials

Anish Rao et al.

Summary: The creation of complex matter with desired properties through self-assembly is a challenging but promising area of research. The ability to control the interactions between individual components and predict the outcome of self-assembly processes is crucial. This review highlights the role of finely tuned interparticle interactions in achieving preferred self-assembled structures and functional properties. However, there are still challenges ahead in the creation of complex and evolvable matter.

Hysteresis in the Thermo-Responsive Assembly of Hexa(ethylene glycol) Derivative-Modified Gold Nanodiscs as an Effect of Shape

Joshua Chidiebere Mba et al.

Summary: This study presents the temperature-responsive assembly and thermodynamic behavior of AuNDs functionalized with a temperature-responsive ligand. Heating leads to the face-to-face assembly of AuNDs due to hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions, resulting in a blue shift of the plasmon peak. The study also reveals significant rate-independent hysteresis in the reversible assembly/disassembly behavior. This research opens up possibilities for the development of novel functional materials using AuNDs.

Statistical thermodynamics in reversible clustering of gold nanoparticles. A first step towards nanocluster heat engines

Stefano A. Mezzasalma et al.

Summary: This study proposes a statistical thermodynamics variational criterion to investigate thermal hysteresis in reversible clustering of gold nanoparticles. The findings suggest that nanoclusters have the potential to generate useful work from heat and pave the way for nanoclustering heat engines. The role of relevant interparticle potential parameters in hysteresis is explored, and the impact of nanoparticle size on the cycle extent is analyzed. The research has significant implications for the development of nanoclustering heat engines.

Active Plasmonics with Responsive, Binary Assemblies of Gold Nanorods and Nanospheres

Piotr Szustakiewicz et al.

Summary: A simple strategy for the fabrication of films of binary nanoparticle assemblies is introduced, with dynamic control over the configuration of gold nanorods and nanospheres achieved through the melting of liquid-crystal-like nanoparticle ligands. This approach provides a route for preparing hierarchical nanoparticle superstructures with applications in reversibly switchable, visible-range plasmonic technologies.

Molecular configuration-mediated thermo-responsiveness in oligo(ethylene glycol) derivatives attached on gold nanoparticles†

Kun Xiong et al.

Summary: The study presents the tuning of thermo-responsive properties of oligo(ethylene glycol) derivatives attached on gold nanoparticles through local environmental control induced by hydrophobic moieties at their terminus and molecular configuration. Control of local OEG density by surface curvature or ligand mixing leads to different degrees of accessibility to the hydrophobic terminus, promoting assembly temperature tuning.
