Effect of Stereochemically Active Electron Lone Pairs on Magnetic Ordering in Trivanadates

George Agbeworvi et al.

Summary: This study compares s- and p-block monovalent trivanadates and demonstrates that lone-pair repulsions and lattice anharmonicity drive anisotropic structural distortions, which in turn modulate magnetic ordering of electrons on the trivanadate host framework. The stereoactive electron lone pairs derived from filled 5/6s(2) states of p-block cations have diverse applications and play a crucial role in modifying electronic structure and mediating superexchange interactions.

Protecting groups in insertion chemistry: Site-selective positioning of lithium ions in intercalation hosts

Joseph V. Handy et al.

Summary: The expanding toolbox of functionalization chemistries allows for selective installation of moieties on specific sites of a substrate, making it the foundation of modern organic and biochemical syntheses. In the field of lithium-ion battery electrodes, the installation of mobile guest ions in specific interstitial sites plays a crucial role. However, the site-selective positioning of cations with atomic precision is still unexplored. This study demonstrates the use of topochemistry to achieve site-selective positioning of Li ions in a 1D z-V2O5 insertion host, providing unprecedented structural insight into fully stuffed frameworks critical for high-energy-density intercalation electrodes.

Lone but Not Alone: Precise Positioning of Lone Pairs for the Design of Photocatalytic Architectures

Joseph Handy et al.

Summary: With the current economic growth and consumption trends, the world is facing a major issue of global warming caused by greenhouse gas emissions. To combat climate change, it is crucial to decarbonize the transportation infrastructure and develop efficient photocatalytic architectures that can utilize water or CO2 to store solar energy. This perspective article introduces a palette of heterostructures designed for direct solar-driven water splitting and CO2 reduction, which involve the use of quantum dots and vanadium oxide compounds. The design principles and synthetic strategies for these heterostructures are discussed, along with the potential application of machine learning and high-throughput synthesis in materials design.

Insights into Low Thermal Conductivity in Inorganic Materials for Thermoelectrics

Tanmoy Ghosh et al.

Summary: Efficient manipulation of thermal conductivity and understanding of microscopic mechanisms of phonon scattering are crucial for achieving high thermoelectric performance. Various strategies including nanostructural modifications, introduction of phonon scattering centers, and manipulation of defects and disorder have been developed to lower thermal conductivity in crystalline solids. Intrinsic lattice distortion and lattice anharmonicity originating from mechanisms such as rattling and bonding heterogeneity have recently gained popularity. This Perspective outlines the role of chemical bonding and structural chemistry in controlling thermal transport in high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Soft crystal lattice and large anharmonicity facilitate the self-trapped excitonic emission in ultrathin 2D nanoplates of RbPb2Br5

Jayita Pradhan et al.

Summary: Strong electron-phonon coupling leads to the broadband self-trapping of excitons (STE) in RbPb2Br5 2D NPLs, which is caused by the lattice softness and high anharmonicity in the low-dimensional structure. This broadband emission has potential applications in optoelectronics and solid-state lighting.

Emphanisis in Cubic (SnSe)0.5(AgSbSe2)0.5: Dynamical Off-Centering of Anion Leads to Low Thermal Conductivity and High Thermoelectric Performance

Moinak Dutta et al.

Summary: The study investigates the phenomenon of emphanisis in the (SnSe)(0.5)(AgSbSe2)(0.5) system, showing that the gradual deviation of the Se atoms' positions leads to changes in M-Se bonds, ultimately reducing the lattice thermal conductivity. The research also demonstrates the potential of this system for promising thermoelectric properties, with a figure of merit (zT) reaching 1.05 at 706 K.

Lessons learned from FeSb2O4 on stereoactive lone pairs as a design principle for anion insertion

Wasif Zaheer et al.

Summary: The research reports a topotactic chemical insertion mechanism of fluoride ions in FeSb2O4, involving synergies between iron and antimony centers. The separation of the redox center from the p-block coordination site alleviates structural strain and enables reversible diffusion of fluoride ions.
