Robust and dynamic underwater adhesives enabled by catechol-functionalized poly(disulfides) network

Chen-Yu Shi et al.

Summary: A robust underwater adhesive material is achieved by coupling natural thioctic acid with mussel-inspired iron-catechol chemistry, showing high-strength, tunable, and reusable adhesion to diverse surfaces. The strategy combines natural thioctic acid and mussel-inspired iron-catechol complexes to enable ultra-strong adhesive materials that can be used underwater and exhibit unprecedentedly high adhesion strength on diverse surfaces. The robust crosslinking interaction of the iron-catechol complexes and high-density hydrogen bonding contribute to the ultra-high interfacial adhesion strength.

Improving epoxy adhesion with steel adherends using a tannic acid-based additive: Impact on resin properties and interfacial bonding

Noel Babu et al.

Summary: Traditional surface treatment techniques are often insufficient for maintaining bond durability of adhesively bonded joints. The potential of using tannic acid (TA) as an additive to improve the interfacial bond durability of epoxy adhesives has not been adequately studied. In this study, an additive (TA-AGE) was synthesized and added to the epoxy, resulting in a significant improvement in the single lap shear strength. However, the hydrophilicity and water uptake characteristics of the epoxy were increased, negatively impacting its mechanical properties.

A furan-containing biomimetic multiphase structure for strong and supertough sustainable adhesives

Hongsheng Wang et al.

Summary: The development of sustainable adhesives with high strength and excellent ductility is challenging. This study successfully prepared furan-ring-containing biomimetic multiphase polymers to achieve fully sustainable, strong, and supertough adhesives. The key factors of these adhesives are the asymmetric structure and oxygenated nature of the aromatic furan ring. The adhesives demonstrate beneficial features such as easy phase separation, dynamic hard phases, strain-induced orientation and recrystallization, and multiple oxygen binding to substrates, resulting in high adhesion strength, exceptional toughness, temperature adaptability, and solvent resistance.

Observation of In-Plane Quantum Griffiths Singularity in Two-Dimensional Crystalline Superconductors

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that Quantum Griffiths singularity (QGS) exists in ultrathin PdTe2 films, with QGS observed under both perpendicular and parallel magnetic fields in four-monolayer films. However, as the film thickness increases to six monolayers, QGS disappears under perpendicular field but persists under parallel field, suggesting differences in microscopic processes may be the cause of this discrepancy. This work demonstrates the universality of parallel field induced QGS and calls for further investigation on quantum phase transitions under parallel magnetic fields.
