An Unbalanced Battle in Excellence: Revealing Effect of Ni/Co Occupancy on Water Splitting and Oxygen Reduction Reactions in Triple-Conducting Oxides for Protonic Ceramic Electrochemical Cells

Wei Tang et al.

Summary: By engineering non-equivalent B-site Ni/Co occupancy in praseodymium cobaltite perovskite, this work promotes triple conduction by facilitating proton conduction, replacing conventional electrodes with sluggish kinetics in protonic ceramic electrochemical cells. Surface infrared spectroscopy is used to study the dehydration behavior and proves the existence of protons in the perovskite lattice. The increased nickel replacement on the B-site positively impacts proton defect stability, catalytic activity, and electrochemical performance, making it a promising pathway for increasing catalytic activity in oxygen reduction and water splitting reactions.

Activating nano-bulk interplays for sustainable ammonia electrosynthesis

Meng Li et al.

Summary: Small changes in catalyst composition and modification can greatly enhance (electro)catalysis. By carefully tailoring the Ru/La0.25Ce0.75O2-x catalysts through hydrothermal treatment and control over Ru loadings, the ammonia production rate can be increased significantly. The catalysts formed in a protonic ceramic electrolyzer facilitate ammonia synthesis and can be applied to more complex reactions.

A mini-review on proton conduction of BaZrO3-based perovskite electrolytes

Clarita Y. Regalado Vera et al.

Summary: Doped barium zirconate is a material with high proton conductivity and chemical stability, considered promising for proton-conducting solid oxide electrochemical cells. While its proton conduction has been extensively studied, the specific phenomena behind its conduction properties are not fully understood. Specialized techniques and computational tools are beginning to elucidate the phenomena governing the material's conduction properties.

Proton Conductive BaZr0.8-xCexY0.2O3-δ: Influence of NiO Sintering Additive on Crystal Structure, Hydration Behavior, and Conduction Properties

Donglin Han et al.

Summary: The addition of NiO in Y-doped BaZrO3, BaCeO3, and BaZr1-xCexO3 decreases dehydration temperature and proton concentration, leading to reduced ionic conductivity and transport number. This results in worse ion conductivity and brittle electrolyte in Ce-rich samples containing Ni.

Catalyst Deactivation Probed by Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy

Chase N. Taylor et al.

Summary: The study investigates the aging characteristics of catalysts using positron annihilation spectroscopy, tracking the evolution of microstructures in zeolite catalysts during deactivation. Results show that as the reaction progresses, zeolite nanopores decrease in size while mesopores increase, indicating a change in defect structure. The technique's sensitivity to different pore structures suggests it may be useful for heterogeneous catalysis studies.

Positron lifetime spectroscopy of defect structures in Cd1-xZnxTe mixed crystals grown by vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger method

Marek Gorgol et al.

Summary: Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy was used to study grown-in defects in Cd1-xZnxTe mixed crystals, revealing higher lifetimes in ternary alloys compared to binary systems. The competition in positron trapping between defects characteristic for different structural systems with increasing Zn content was observed, along with a correlation between defects and lattice thermal conductivity of the samples. The applicability of the positron trapping model to CdTe-based materials was discussed.
