SO2-based thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer: synthesis, microstructure, and mechanical properties

Xian-Chao Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) elastomer was developed using a polysulfite oligomer derived from the copolymerization of SO2 and propylene oxide (PO) as the soft segments (SSs). It was found that increasing the hard segment (HS) content improved tensile strength but reduced stretchability when the SS molecular weight was constant. On the other hand, both tensile strength and stretchability decreased with increasing SS molecular weight when the HS content was constant. The SO2-based TPU elastomers exhibited superior mechanical properties compared to poly(propylene oxide)-based TPU elastomers obtained via the same method, making it an attractive option for utilizing SO2.

Tian-Jun Yue et al.

Summary: The thermal performance of semiaromatic polythioesters obtained from the copolymerization of epoxides with phthalic thioanhydride (PTA) has been improved by increasing the isotacticity of the copolymers in a regioselective manner. This was achieved through the use of unsymmetrical Salcy-based Cr-complexes with modified steric hindrance around the catalytic center, resulting in highly regioselective copolymerization and the formation of isotacticity-rich polythioesters. Furthermore, semiaromatic polythioester stereocomplexes were obtained by blending equal-mass (R)- and (S)-isotactic PGE/PTA copolymers, which exhibited crystalline nature with a higher melting temperature compared to the amorphous isotactic parent copolymer.

Catalysts are required to reduce reaction temperature and widen the choice of monomers, resulting in higher organically bound sulfur and prevention of toxic H2S formation. A recent approach called photo-induced inverse vulcanization allows the reaction to happen at room temperature and introduces volatile and gaseous alkenes, alkynes, and very low boiling monomers into the reaction range.

Organocatalytic selective coupling of episulfides with carbon disulfide for the synthesis of poly(trithiocarbonate)s and cyclic trithiocarbonates

Chao Chen et al.

Summary: This work presents an efficient method for utilizing carbon disulfide (CS2) as a sulfur-containing C1 resource to synthesize linear poly(trithiocarbonate)s and cyclic trithiocarbonates. The copolymerization of CS2 with episulfides, initiated by PPNCl or phosphazene benzoxide, leads to alternating poly(trithiocarbonate)s without any catalyst. In contrast, when initiated by tetrabutylammonium halide, the same reaction produces cyclic trithiocarbonates. The role of initiating onium salts in the linear/cyclic selectivity, as well as the impact of reaction conditions, such as temperature, solvent, and feeding ratio, were investigated. Additionally, poly(trithiocarbonate)s can be completely unzipped into cyclic trithiocarbonates when exposed to a radical source or UV irradiation. The potential of utilizing this feature to create degradable polymers using oligotrithiocarbonates as self-immolating linkers between dithiol alkyl precursors was explored.

The synthesis of degradable sulfur-containing polymers: precise control of structure and stereochemistry

Tian-Jun Yue et al.

Summary: The incorporation of sulfur atoms into polymer main chains can enhance properties such as mechanical strength, optical properties, thermal properties, and adhesive abilities. This makes sulfur-containing polymers promising materials, but challenges such as mixed structures and weak stereochemistry control need to be addressed for precise synthesis.
