Critical assessment of synthetic accessibility scores in computer-assisted synthesis planning

Grzegorz Skoraczynski et al.

Summary: Modern computer-assisted synthesis planning tools provide support for the problem, but are limited by computational complexity. This limitation can be overcome by scoring synthetic accessibility. However, there is a lack of research on the applicability and correctness of machine learning scoring approaches, as well as a lack of critical assessment of synthetic accessibility scores under common test conditions.

Tayyaba Mubashir et al.

Summary: In this study, a data-driven framework is introduced to design small molecule acceptors (SMAs) by using machine learning models to predict their energy levels. The best model is identified by calculating SHAP values and is used to generate and shortlist 5000 SMAs based on their band gaps. The synthetic accessibility and structural similarity of the selected SMAs are also evaluated, showing that they are easy to synthesize and widely dispersed.

Recent Advances in Organic Photovoltaic Materials Based on Thiazole-Containing Heterocycles

Mengwei Ji et al.

Summary: Organic solar cells (OSCs) have made significant progress due to the development of wide bandgap electron donors and narrow bandgap non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs). Thiazole (Tz) and its derived fused heterocycles have been widely used to construct photovoltaic materials, especially conjugated polymers. These Tz-containing heterocycles have favorable characteristics such as electron deficiency, rigidity, high planarity, and enhanced intra/intermolecular interactions, leading to excellent photovoltaic performance.

Double Asymmetric Core Optimizes Crystal Packing to Enable Selenophene-based Acceptor with Over 18 % Efficiency in Binary Organic Solar Cells

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, two asymmetric isomeric small molecule acceptors (SMAs) with asymmetric alkyl chains and selenophene-based central core were synthesized for organic solar cells (OSCs). Crystallographic analysis showed that AYT9Se11-Cl had a more compact and ordered intermolecular packing compared to AYT11Se9-Cl, resulting in higher electron mobility in neat AYT9Se11-Cl film. The PM6 : AYT9Se11-Cl blend film exhibited better morphology with appropriate phase separation and distinct face-on orientation compared to PM6 : AYT11Se9-Cl. The OSCs with PM6 : AYT9Se11-Cl achieved a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.12% compared to PM6 : AYT11Se9-Cl (17.52%), making it the highest efficiency for selenium-incorporated SMAs in binary BHJ OSCs.

Muhammad Ramzan Saeed et al.

Summary: A series of new acceptor molecules were designed by breaking symmetry and exhibited high values of electronic charge shifting and perfect molecular packing. The impact of symmetry breaking was examined using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory, and the photovoltaic and geometric aspects of the reshaped systems were computed theoretically. The results showed that SGS-1 to SGS-4 are well-designed systems for the development of highly efficient active layer for OSCs.

Easy and fast prediction of green solvents for small molecule donor-based organic solar cells through machine learning

Asif Mahmood et al.

Summary: Solubility is critical in various research areas and solubility parameters are useful for solvent selection. This study predicts Hansen solubility parameters using machine learning, comparing molecular descriptors and fingerprints as inputs. Machine learning models trained with descriptors show higher prediction ability than those trained with fingerprints, and offer an easy and fast alternative to density functional theory (DFT) methods. With the best-trained machine learning model, green solvents are selected for organic solar cell applications, offering a convenient and efficient method for solvent selection.

Non-fullerene acceptors with hetero-dihalogenated terminals induce significant difference in single crystallography and enable binary organic solar cells with 17.5% efficiency

Lai Wang et al.

Summary: The synthesis of two new hetero-dihalogenated terminals with a fluorine/chlorine or fluorine/bromine pair, along with three NFAs incorporating these terminals, led to the achievement of high-performance OSCs. The presence of a fluorine/chlorine hetero-dihalogenated terminal resulted in the most planar molecular geometry, shortest intermolecular packing distance, and largest pi-pi electronic coupling among the acceptors, leading to improved crystallinity, phase separation, charge mobility, and recombination for enhanced power conversion efficiency of up to 17.52%.
