Flocculation performance and mechanism of P (DMDAAC-AM) on clay mineral layer: Insights from DFT calculation and experiment

Lujun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flocculation performance and mechanism of quaternary ammonium cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) on clay mineral particles. The experimental results show that the synthesized polymer PDA exhibits better flocculation and sedimentation effects than commercially available polyacrylamide (PAM) on kaolinite and montmorillonite suspensions. Simulation results demonstrate that the PDA structural unit can stably adsorb on the surface of mineral particles, with variations influenced by the quantum chemical properties of the structural unit AM and DMDAAC molecules.

Adsorption of hydrated Al3+ on the kaolinite (001) surface: A density functional theory study

Yuqi Miao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adsorption behavior of hydrated aluminum ions (Al3+) on kaolinite surface using density functional theory and molecular dynamics simulation. The results showed that hydrated aluminum ions preferentially form stable bidentate adsorption complexes on the kaolinite surface, and the Al-Os bond exhibits strong ionicity and bond filling characteristics.

Preparation of Fe-La montmorillonite nanosheets based composite hydrogel beads for As(V) removal from water

Chenyu Wu et al.

Summary: A Fe-La-Mts-CS-PVA Gel composite hydrogel was synthesized for arsenic removal from water. The structure and As(V) adsorption performance of Fe-La-Mts-CS-PVA Gels were investigated. The results showed that Fe-La-Mts-CS-PVA Gel had a porous structure with abundant large pores, facilitating the diffusion of water. The addition of Fe(III) improved the adsorption capacity of As(V), but excessive iron did not further increase the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mechanism of As(V) on Fe-La-Mts-CS-PVA Gel was attributed to electrostatic adsorption and the formation of As-O-M complexes with Fe(III) and La(III).

Effect of exfoliation degree on the performance of montmorillonite nanosheets

Renbo Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of montmorillonite nanosheets (MMTNS) with different exfoliation degrees and their relationship with the preparation of functional composites. The results show that MMTNS with high exfoliation degree have more negative electrical sites exposed, stronger repulsive potential energy between particles, high surface negative electricity, and excellent dispersion stability. Additionally, MMTNS with high exfoliation degree exhibit better gelling property and higher adsorption capacity for organic matter.

Adsorption of Mg2+ and K+ on the kaolinite (001) surface in aqueous system: A combined DFT and AIMD study with an experimental verification

Zhijun Zhang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microscopic adsorption mechanism of Mg2+ and K+ on kaolinite (001) surface in aqueous system using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. The dominant complexes of hydrated Mg2+ and K+ in aqueous environment were identified, with bidentate complexes of Mg2+ and monodentate complexes of K+ being their respective dominant complexes. The binding energies of all the adsorption complexes of Mg2+ were found to be higher than those of K+, indicating that Mg2+ is easier to adsorb on kaolinite surface than K+.

Adsorption mechanism of polyacrylamide on kaolinite surface in the presence of Ca2+: Insights from DFT calculation

Zhijun Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the microscopic adsorption mechanism of PAM on kaolinite surface in the presence of Ca2+ was investigated using DFT. The adsorption of PAM on kaolinite (001) surface was found to be dominated by three strong hydrogen bonds, while non-bonding interactions were observed on the kaolinite (00-1) surface. The presence of Ca2+ promoted the adsorption of PAM on the kaolinite (001) surface, but inhibited adsorption on the kaolinite (00-1) surface.
