Behaviour of Sr, Ca, and Mg isotopes under variable hydrological conditions in high-relief large river systems

Bei -Bei Chen et al.

Summary: To assess the response of chemical weathering processes in large high-relief river systems to climatic variability, the researchers studied the seasonal changes in isotopes of radiogenic strontium, stable calcium, and magnesium in two rivers in the Tibetan Plateau. The results show that the isotope signatures reflect the influence of recharge meltwaters, secondary mineral precipitation, evaporite dissolution, and soil weathering under different flow conditions. The study highlights the potential of combining multiple isotope systems to understand water-rock interaction dynamics.

Review of techniques, challenges, and new developments for calcium isotope ratio measurements

Ramananda Chakrabarti et al.

Summary: Calcium isotope measurements are conducted using various mass spectrometers, such as Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) and Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS), each with its own advantages and disadvantages for analyzing different types of samples. Recent advances in automation and new technologies have improved sample throughput and measurement precision, but further refinement of standards and comparison methods is needed.

Assessing molybdenum isotope fractionation during continental weathering as recorded by weathering profiles in saprolites and bauxites

Summary: Study of molybdenum isotopes in three deep weathering profiles reveals that saprolites generally lose molybdenum and have lighter isotopic values, while ferruginous bauxites tend to gain molybdenum and have heavier isotopic values in continental weathering processes.

Lithium isotopic features of Quaternary basaltic saprolite, Zhanjiang, China: Atmospheric input and clay-mineral adsorption

Fengtai Tong et al.

Summary: Silicate weathering, especially basalt, plays a significant role in drawing down atmospheric CO2 and impacting long-term carbon cycling. The investigation on Li isotopes in tropical regolith and atmospheric sources revealed that marine aerosols are the main contributor of atmospheric Li to saprolite, with isotopic fractionation caused by adsorption on secondary minerals. Furthermore, Li isotopes are sensitive to continental weathering and can be used as an indicator for the circulation of materials on Earth's surface.

Large calcium isotope fractionations by zeolite minerals from Iceland

Claire J. Nelson et al.

Summary: Calcium isotope ratios in Icelandic zeolites are closely related to the average calcium-oxygen bond lengths in the minerals, suggesting the potential for developing a novel geothermometer for low-grade basalt metamorphism. These findings also have implications for using calcium isotopes to trace basalt weathering processes and their role in long-term climate regulation and carbon capture and storage.
