Flow Reconstruction Around a Surface-Mounted Prism from Sparse Velocity and/or Scalar Measurements Using a Combination of POD and a Data-Driven Estimator

Shengqi Lu et al.

Summary: A data-driven algorithm is proposed for flow reconstruction from sparse velocity and/or scalar measurements. The algorithm is applied to the flow around a two-dimensional, wall-mounted, square prism. By processing snapshots of flow and scalar fields, POD modes and their time coefficients are derived to reduce the problem dimensionality. A system identification algorithm is then employed to build a reduced order, linear, dynamical system for the flow and scalar dynamics. Using optimal estimation theory, a Kalman estimator is derived to predict the time coefficients of the POD modes from sparse measurements. Analysis shows that it is meaningful to extract velocity from scalar concentration measurements as the flow field leaves its footprint on the scalar. The results demonstrate that the algorithm can achieve remarkably good reconstruction of flow statistics and instantaneous flow patterns with a small number of sensors, even a single scalar sensor.

Decomposition of power number in a stirred tank and real time reconstruction of 3D large-scale flow structures from sparse pressure measurements

Kirill Mikhaylov et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow inside an unbaffled stirred tank at Re=600 and decomposes the pressure field into different components based on the temporal coefficients of velocity proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) modes. The pressure components are used to analyze the power number of individual blades and blade combinations, and a linear dynamic estimator is derived to reconstruct the 3D velocity field in real time from sparse pressure measurements. The results show that the estimator is robust to changes in operating conditions and has potential for real time control of mixing with precise feeding control.

Reconstruction of the 3D hydrodynamics in a baffled stirred tank using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition

C. Mayorga et al.

Summary: In this study, unsteady turbulent flow in a four-baffled stirred tank equipped with a Rushton turbine was computed using ANSYS FLUENT (R) with the sliding mesh technique. The POD algorithm was applied to both fixed and rotating mesh zones, as well as the full 3D CFD data. The results showed that 99.9% of system variance is recovered with the first three modes, and the reconstructed velocity field revealed trailing vortices and the mean flow.

Sparse sensor-based cylinder flow estimation using artificial neural networks

Kevin H. Manohar et al.

Summary: Advancements in the estimation of fluid flows from remote sensors have rapidly progressed through the emerging use of artificial neural networks (ANNs). This study presents a family of challenge flow cases for the advancement of sparse sensor-based flow estimation techniques, focusing on the laminar wake development and wake interactions of two cylinders. The results show that the LSTM-based estimator significantly outperforms other approaches in both time and frequency domains, and is more robust to sensor noise.

Convolutional-network models to predict wall-bounded turbulence from wall quantities

Luca Guastoni et al.

Summary: Two convolutional neural network models were trained to predict velocity-fluctuation fields in turbulent open-channel flow, with one directly predicting fluctuations and the other reconstructing flow fields using a linear combination of orthonormal basis functions. Both models outperformed traditional methods in predicting nonlinear interactions in the flow.

Reconstruction of large-scale flow structures in a stirred tank from limited sensor data

Kirill Mikhaylov et al.

Summary: The study combines reduced order modeling and system identification to reconstruct the temporal evolution of large-scale vortical structures behind the blades of a Rushton impeller. The results demonstrate that even using the velocity time signal from a single sensor point, the first pair of modes can be reconstructed well. Increasing the number of sensor points improves accuracy and stability, leading to better reconstruction of the second pair of POD modes. The estimator derived at Reynolds number 600 shows robustness when applied to flows at Reynolds numbers 500 and 700.
