Selective and sensitive adsorption of Au(III) by poly-N-phenylglycine

Tingting Wu et al.

Summary: The sustainable utilization of metal resources and the imbalance between supply and demand for metals urgently require the recovery of metals from e-waste, which is considered an urban mine. In this study, poly-N-phenylglycine (PNPG) particles were used to effectively capture Au(III). The mechanism mainly involved chemisorption and monolayer adsorption, with electrostatic interactions and redox reactions occurring during adsorption. A PNPG membrane was prepared to solve the problem of removing the adsorbent after adsorption, and it exhibited stable performance for multiple cycles and selective capturing ability for Au(III) in uneven-concentration polymetallic solutions. Approximately 80% of the gold in the leaching solution of waste printed circuit boards was successfully recovered using the prepared PNPG membrane.

Chaopeng Liu et al.

Summary: A Cu2O and thiourea functionalized MCM-41 (CMTU) nanoarchitecture was prepared for selectively recovering Au (III) from an acidic solution. The material achieved this through electrostatic attraction and chelation, resulting in the binding of Au (III) to the CMTU surface. Cu (I) then readily reduced Au (III) to Au (I) and Au (0). This material displayed excellent adsorption capacity, followed specific models for adsorption, and exhibited a spontaneously endothermic recovery process, as well as high selectivity and reusability.
