Upcycling cotton textile waste into bio-based building blocks through an environmentally friendly and high-yield conversion process

Ramon E. Vera et al.

Summary: This study proposes mechanical refining as a chemical-free pretreatment method for converting cotton textile waste into glucose through enzymatic hydrolysis. Mechanical refining promotes cotton fiber fibrillation and increases its specific surface area, water swellability, enzyme adsorption, and sugar yields. A non-linear model was developed to predict cotton conversion, enabling process optimization and achieving high yields using CTec2 and CTec3 cellulase enzymes. The results demonstrate the potential of mechanical refining as a sustainable approach to produce sugar-based building blocks from textile waste within the circular economy framework.

Review on effect of different type of dyes on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for textile color removal

Guntur Adisurya Ismail et al.

Summary: The textile industry, a vital sector in developing countries, faces increasing environmental concerns, particularly regarding the high color and COD concentration in its wastewater. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are considered the best technology for color removal, but the understanding of the reaction mechanisms is still limited.

Developing Alternative, High-Absorbency Brown Fibers: Tissue Paper from Upcycled Corrugated Packaging Waste to Meet New Consumer Trends

Franklin Zambrano et al.

Summary: Consumers' interest in brown tissue papers has led to an increase in their market share and selling prices, despite their limited performance. The excess packaging waste in the US has created an opportunity to use old corrugated containerboard (OCC) as an alternative source of brown pulp. The study shows that chlorine-free treatments can improve the quality of OCC pulp, making it suitable for manufacturing high-performance tissue papers.

A comparative study of ozonation on aqueous reactive dyes and reactive-dyed cotton

Mengru Li et al.

Summary: Ozonation has been increasingly used and reported in recent years. This paper compared the effects of ozonation on aqueous reactive dyes and dyed cotton, revealing different reaction kinetics and pH dependency between the two materials. High temperature also had different effects on the two substrates, with hydrolysis of dyes in aqueous solution but not dyed cotton.

State of the art of post-consumer textile waste upcycling to reach the zero waste milestone

Michaela Dina Stanescu

Summary: The textile industry is a major source of pollution, with waste from production processes and post-consumer waste contributing to environmental issues. The increase in textile consumption has led to a greater quantity of post-consumer waste, prompting a shift towards a circular economy to reduce carbon and water footprints. Proper management of post-consumer textile waste is essential for achieving zero waste goals.

Upcycling strategies for old corrugated containerboard to attain high-performance tissue paper: A viable answer to the packaging waste generation dilemma

Franklin Zambrano et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the feasibility of upgrading old corrugated containerboard (OCC) into high-quality pulp for tissue paper production through bleaching processes. The bleached OCC demonstrated improved tensile index and absorbency rate, but had adverse effects on bulk and softness. Compared to other materials, bleached OCC showed better performance in certain aspects.

Investigation into the removal of pigment, sulphur and vat colourants from cotton textiles and implications for waste cellulosic recycling

Pendo Bigambo et al.

Summary: The study investigated methods to remove pigment/polymer prints and common sulphur and vat dyes from coloured cotton fabric, finding that sulphur and vat colorants can be effectively stripped, but the removal of the pigment/polymer binder colorant system was less predictable and less complete, likely due to the different chemical natures of the polymer binder and pigments. This highlights the range of chemistries applied to cotton and suggests that developing a universal single treatment to strip out all finishes may be problematic.

Impact of dyes and finishes on the aquatic biodegradability of cotton textile fibers and microfibers released on laundering clothes: Correlations between enzyme adsorption and activity and biodegradation rates

Marielis C. Zambrano et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of common textile finishes on the biodegradation of cotton fibers in an aquatic environment, finding that durable press and water repellent finishing treatments decreased the rate of biodegradation. Despite the impact of finishing treatments on the initial rates of biodegradation, the cellulosic material maintained its biodegradability.
