Role of operating parameters in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of anticancer drugs: Ifosfamide, 5-fluorouracil and imatinib using CdS/TiO2

Pawel Mazierski et al.

Summary: The ineffective removal of drugs in conventional wastewater treatment plants prompts the search for new, effective and environmentally friendly methods, such as photoelectrocatalysis. This research assessed the effectiveness of CdS/TiO2 nanocomposite in the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of three commonly used anticancer drugs. The study found that increasing irradiation power and decreasing pH significantly improved drug degradation efficiency, while the presence of certain inorganic ions decreased the decomposition rate. The mechanisms of drug degradation were also investigated, and degradation pathways were proposed based on identified by-products. The research confirmed the reduction of eco-toxicity towards duckweed (Lemna minor) in drugs solutions treated by photoelectrocatalysis.

Enhanced visible light photoelectrocatalytic degradation of o-chloronitrobenzene through surface plasmonic Au nanoparticles and g-C3N4 co-modified TiO2 nanotube arrays photoanode

Shuaishuai Xin et al.

Summary: In this study, Au nanoparticles and graphitic carbon nitride co-modified TiO2 nanotube arrays photoanodes were fabricated to degrade o-chloronitrobenzene target pollutant in a photoelectrocatalytic system. The fabricated Au/g-C3N4/TNAs-0.20 photoanode showed superior optical and photoelectrochemical properties and increased dechlorination efficiency, leading to enhanced degradation and removal of total organic carbon. The presence of anions and humic acid inhibited the degradation process. The photogenerated species, such as electrons, O-2(-), holes, and OH, participated in the degradation process. The degradation pathway of o-CNB was inferred through GC-MS spectra and DFT calculation. The acute toxicity and bioaccumulation factor of o-CNB were effectively reduced by the photoelectrocatalytic degradation.

Water decontamination via nonradical process by nanoconfined Fenton-like catalysts

Tongcai Liu et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need to develop effective and sustainable solutions to reduce water pollution. Heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts are commonly used to remove contaminants from water, but their effectiveness is limited due to the scarcity of reactive species (RS). In this study, a nanoconfinement strategy was employed to encapsulate short-lived RS at the nanoscale, significantly improving their utilization efficiency in Fenton-like reactions. The nanoconfined catalyst, assembled with Co3O4 nanoparticles in carbon nanotube nanochannels, exhibited exceptional reaction rates and excellent selectivity. The results suggested that the degradation of contaminants was due to singlet oxygen (O-1(2)). Density functional theory calculations showed that the nanoconfined space induced quantum mutation and lowered activation energy barriers. Simulation results revealed that the enrichment of contaminants on the catalyst reduced migration distance and enhanced the utilization of O-1(2). The synergy between the shell layer and core-shell structure further improved the selectivity of O-1(2) towards contaminant oxidation in real waters. This nanoconfined catalyst offers a viable strategy for water pollution control.

Summary: Selective partial oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde without additives was achieved using advantageous titanium oxide nano-photocatalysts. Titanate nanotubes and nanocores of anatase surrounded by amorphous titanium hydroxide phase performed the best. Different mechanisms and oxidation pathways are photo-catalyzed depending on the physicochemical features of the nanocatalysts and the light irradiation. The study also revealed that utilizing organic compounds like benzoquinone as scavenger may result in photolytic decomposition.

Modified-pollen confined hybrid system: A promising union for visible-light-driven photocatalytic antibiotic degradation

Zhiquan Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an eco-friendly and highly efficient biohybrid photocatalyst, carbonized rape pollen confined Cu2O nanoparticles (Cu2O/BC), was fabricated for the photodegradation of tetracycline under visible-light illumination. The Cu2O/BC exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, with a degradation rate roughly 6.0 and 3.2 times higher than BC and Cu2O, respectively. The enhanced performance was attributed to the construction of a heterojunction, promoting the effective separation of photogenerated carriers, and the three-dimensional hollow BC providing structural stability for Cu2O. This work provides crucial insights into the utilization of nature-based biological materials in efficient antibiotic removal and environmental remediation.

Summary: In order to mitigate the inhibition effect of NOMs on TiO2 photocatalysis for removal of emerging contaminants, AC/TiO2 composites with different pore structure were prepared. The results showed that anatase TiO2 particles were uniformly distributed in the pores or onto the surface of activated carbons. The total removal rate of EE2 on the four AC/TiO2 composites reached above 90%, which was 30% higher than that of EE2 on TiO2. The degradation rate constants of EE2 on the composites were much higher than that on TiO2.

Activation of persulfate by humic substances: Stoichiometry and changes in the optical properties of the humic substances

Cheolyong Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the activation of persulfate through electron transfer from humic substances (HS). The consumption of persulfate correlated with the phenol contents of the HS. Redox-active carbonyl groups, such as aromatic ketones and quinone, also contributed to persulfate consumption by donating electrons. Terrestrially derived aquatic HS containing phenol groups activated persulfate more than other species, resulting in increased benzene oxidation. Soil-derived HS scavenged more sulfate radicals than other types of HS due to their larger molecular size. The fluorescence integration volume for HS reacted with persulfate correlated with persulfate consumption. Predicting persulfate activation through electron transfer from HS to persulfate can be done by monitoring the decrease in fluorescence integration value. Persulfate activation by HS is more advantageous than conventional persulfate-Fe2+ processes for treating aquifers with electron-rich HS.

Visible-Light Activation of a Dissolved Organic Matter-TiO2 Complex Mediated via Ligand-to-Metal Charge Transfer

Hoang Tran Bui et al.

Summary: In this study, the photoactivity of humic acid/TiO2 complexes (HA/TiO2) under visible light was investigated. The complexes exhibited photoactivity through ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), resulting in the generation of H2O2 in the conduction band. The presence of phenolic groups in the complexes was found to play a key role in visible-light absorption and H2O2 photogeneration. The photochemical formation of H2O2 in river waters spiked with TiO2 was significantly elevated due to the LMCT contribution. These findings provide chemical insights into the photocatalytic activity and potential ecotoxicity of TiO2 in environmental and engineered systems.

Multiple Roles of Dissolved Organic Matter in Advanced Oxidation Processes

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can degrade a wide range of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in water. However, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water can impact the effectiveness of AOPs. DOM can inhibit the degradation of TrOCs, but it can also enhance the formation of useful radicals and alter the transformation pathways of contaminants. Further research is needed to understand how DOM can be used to improve oxidative water purification.
