Improvement of Poly(lactide) Ductile Properties by Plasticization with Biobased Tartaric Acid Ester

Jaume Gomez-Caturla et al.

Summary: Diethyl l-tartrate (DET) is used as a biobased plasticizer to improve the ductile properties and biodegradability of poly(lactide) (PLA) formulations. The addition of 20 wt.% DET significantly increases the elongation at break of PLA to 567%. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images show filament-like structures, indicating effective plasticization. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) reveal that the glass transition temperature of PLA decreases with increasing DET content, enhancing ductility and processability. Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra demonstrate chemical interactions between PLA and DET. Biodegradability analysis confirms that the developed blends are fully biodegradable, achieving complete disintegration after 49 days.

Tailoring Oligomeric Plasticizers for Polylactide through Structural Control

Wenxiang Xuan et al.

Summary: Structural variations were used to tailor the performance of biobased plasticizers for polylactide (PLA), including thermal stability, plasticizing efficiency, and migration resistance. Different plasticizers with varying structures showed different properties. Plasticizers based on 1,4-butanediol decreased the glass-transition temperature and increased the strain at break of PLA, while those based on isosorbide exhibited better thermal stability and migration resistance. Plasticizers with levulinate ester end groups had improved thermal stability, plasticizing efficiency, and migration resistance compared to those with hydroxyl end groups.
