Impact of wettability and injection rate on CO2 plume migration and trapping capacity: A numerical investigation

Haiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: Rock wettability plays a crucial role in the fate of injected CO2, affecting trapping capacity and containment security. Field-scale numerical simulations reveal that wettability and injection rate strongly influence CO2 migration and storage efficiency. Water-wet sandstone exhibits 42% higher residual trapping compared to CO2-wet sandstone, and longer injection durations decrease residual trapping while increasing solubility trapping.

Stability and enhanced oil recovery performance of CO2 in water emulsion: Experimental and molecular dynamic simulation study

Teng Lu et al.

Summary: Enhanced oil recovery by CO2 flooding is beneficial for energy and environmental development. The use of CO2 in water (C/W) emulsion can enhance recovery and improve the stability of CO2. This study investigated the stability and recovery performance of C/W emulsion formed by AOT and SDS. The results revealed that AOT-formed C/W emulsion had higher stability, and higher pressures and lower temperatures contributed to improved stability. Enhanced oil recovery with C/W emulsion was achieved, and the produced oil had lower density, viscosity, and asphaltenes content compared to the original crude oil.

Techno-economic life cycle assessment of CO2-EOR operations towards net negative emissions at farnsworth field unit

Anthony Morgan et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the total greenhouse gas (GHG) life cycle assessment has a significant impact on the optimization of CO2-WAG systems. Ignoring this assessment leads to inaccurate estimation of the overall net carbon emissions. By incorporating the GHG life cycle assessment, along with techno-economic assessment and carbon tax credit, the sequestration of purchased CO2 can be improved. Furthermore, the study highlights the major factors, such as direct flaring volumes of CO2, energy consumption, and equipment efficiency, that contribute to the reduction of the net storage factor.

Mechanism study of nano-laponite modified by low molecular alkylamine to reinforce the stability of high-temperature foam

Haihua Pei et al.

Summary: In this study, nano-laponite modified by low molecular alkylamine is used to enhance the stability of high-temperature foam in steam injection for heavy oil recovery. It is found that the addition of n-hexylamine modified nano-laponite greatly improves the foam stability at high temperatures, with an optimal concentration of n-hexylamine for maximum stability. The modified nano-laponite changes to intermediate hydrophobicity, resulting in increased bulk viscosity and interfacial dilational modulus, and forms a three-dimensional network structure at the gas-liquid interface, which enhances the mechanical rigidity of the liquid film and slows down bubble coalescence and liquid drainage.

Modelling CO2 diffusion coefficient in heavy crude oils and bitumen using extreme gradient boosting and Gaussian process regression

Qichao Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, five machine learning models based on Gaussian process regression (GPR) and Extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) were developed to estimate the diffusion coefficient of CO2 in heavy crude oil/bitumen. The XGBoost model demonstrated the highest precision with an R2 of 0.9998 and an average absolute percent relative error of 0.68%. The trends analysis showed that the diffusion coefficient of CO2 in bitumen is a unimodal function of gas concentration, while temperature and pressure have increasing effects on the CO2 diffusion coefficient, which were accurately predicted by the XGBoost model.

Comparison of SDS and L-Methionine in promoting CO2 hydrate kinetics: Implication for hydrate-based CO2 storage

Xuejian Liu et al.

Summary: The continuously increasing CO2 emissions since industrialization has sparked widespread concerns on environmental and climate change issues. This study compared the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and L-methionine ((L)-Met) on CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, and found that (L)-Met is a more effective and eco-friendly kinetic promoter than SDS. The experimental results and hydrate morphology observations provided possible explanations for the observed kinetics. A novel calculation method was developed to quantify the partition of CO2 in different phases. The reusability of (L)-Met as a CO2 hydrate kinetic promoter was also demonstrated. This study highlights the importance of finding efficient and eco-friendly technologies for CO2 sequestration.
