Mope E. Malefane et al.

Summary: In the past seven years, dual Z-scheme hetero-junctions have emerged as favorable approaches for enhanced charge carrier separation. The understanding of charge transfer dynamics plays a major role in evaluating their photoactivity and stability. This article proposes a universal charge transfer-based classification for dual Z-schemes and outlines methods for determining the charge transfer as proof of their existence. Additionally, the article introduces new macroscopic N-scheme and triple Z-scheme systems that can be adopted for various applications.

Constructing Z-scheme g-C3N4/TiO2 heterostructure for promoting degradation of the hazardous dye pollutants

M. Vijayan et al.

Summary: In recent years, the use of dyes and nanoparticles has increased significantly, posing a serious health risk to ecosystems. This study fabricated TiO2 and g-C3N4 nanosheets through co-precipitation and thermal polymerization techniques, respectively. The g-CN-TiO2 nanocomposite with different weight percentages exhibited enhanced photocatalytic performance against methylene blue (MB) dye under UV-visible light illumination. The optimized g-CN-TiO2 nanocomposite (3:1) showed the highest catalytic efficiency due to the low amount of TiO2 nanoparticles deposited on g-CN nanosheets and the development of a Z-scheme system between TiO2 and g-CN.

Ozonation Vs sequential solar driven processes as simultaneous tertiary and quaternary treatments of urban wastewater: A life cycle assessment comparison

Gulnara Maniakova et al.

Summary: Solar driven advanced oxidation processes (S-AOPs) have been successfully studied as tertiary and quaternary treatment of urban wastewater. However, their application has been hindered by the lack of comparison data with consolidated technologies and evaluation of environmental impact. This study compared the environmental impact of a new S-AOP called sequential treatment (ST) with sunlight/H2O2 and solar photo-Fenton (SPF) to pilot scale ozonation (O-3) treatment through Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The results showed that ST had a better overall environmental performance compared to O-3, making it a more sustainable solution for small urban wastewater treatment plants.

A critical review on N-modified TiO2 limits to treat chemical and biological contaminants in water. Evidence that enhanced visible light absorption does not lead to higher degradation rates under whole solar light

Julian A. Rengifo-Herrera et al.

Summary: Recent research on N-modified TiO2 materials has raised several controversial issues related to the synthesis methods, structural characterization, mechanistic action modes, and explanations for limited performance. Some studies controversially attribute nitrogen doping to materials without sufficient analytical evidence, and descriptions of N-modified TiO2 photocatalysts generating holes for hydroxyl radical formation may be problematic. Current methods have not shown a significant enhancement in pollutants degradation and microorganism inactivation under solar light.

Zhenzi Li et al.

Summary: TiO2 nanomaterial photocatalysts have received extensive research interest for energy and environmental applications. The main challenges are the large bandgap and charge-carrier recombination. Recent reports suggest that engineering the defects of TiO2 can enhance photoresponse and promote charge separation efficiency. This review summarizes the synthesis strategies for defective TiO2, especially black TiO2 nanomaterials, and discusses their applications, defect types, characteristics, and photocatalytic mechanism in detail.
