The pH-sensitive oxygenation of FeS: Mineral transformation and immobilization of Cr(VI)

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Iron sulfide (FeS) is commonly used to reduce toxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III) in anoxic environments, but little is known about the fate of FeS and the immobilization of Cr(VI) under oxic conditions regulated by pH. This study reveals that pH significantly affects the mineral transformation of FeS in aquatic environments. Acidic conditions promote dissolution and oxidation of FeS, leading to the formation of goethite, amarantite, and elemental sulfur. On the other hand, basic conditions favor surface-mediated oxidation, resulting in the formation of lepidocrocite and elemental sulfur. The oxygenation of FeS alters its ability to remove Cr(VI), with longer oxygenation impeding Cr(VI) removal at acidic pH and newly generated pyrite improving Cr(VI) reduction at basic pH.

Ascorbic acid-assisted iron silicate composite activated peroxydisulfate for enhanced degradation of aqueous contaminants: Accelerated Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and the interaction between iron and silicate

Yangju Li et al.

Summary: An ascorbic acid (AA)-assisted iron silicate composite activated persulfate (ISC/PDS) process was developed for the degradation of sulfamethazine (SMT). The inclusion of AA resulted in a 72.4% increase in SMT degradation compared to the ISC/PDS process. This enhancement was attributed to the accelerated surface Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle and interaction between iron and silicate. The study also confirmed that the ISC/PDS/AA process is a radical-dominated oxidation process based on quenching, ESR, and competition kinetics experiments.

Ding Liu et al.

Summary: Cobalt-aluminum oxide clusters-embedded γ-Al2O3 nanosheets were successfully prepared and utilized for peroxymonosulfate activation. The amphiphilic surface of the catalyst endowed it with unique interfacial pH-buffering property, preventing cobalt leaching. The presence of Al-OH groups facilitated PMS activation and the redox cycle of Co2+/Co3+, leading to enhanced catalytic activity. Introducing suitable foreign metals further improved the catalytic activity, and a granular support decorated with Mn(40%)-CAO@AO was synthesized for continuous-flow degradation.

Simultaneous degradation of p-nitrophenol and reduction of Cr(VI) in one step using microwave atmospheric pressure plasma

Chaoxia Zhao et al.

Summary: This study developed a new treatment method using an electrodeless high-flow microwave atmospheric plasma jet to simultaneously degrade p-nitrophenol (PNP) and reduce Cr(VI). The study found that PNP intermediates significantly affected the reduction of Cr(VI), and both long-lived H2O2 and short-lived .H aided in the reduction of Cr(VI) during plasma treatment. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS) analysis revealed that PNP intermediates function as Cr(VI) reductants. Factors that influenced simultaneous degradation and reduction included solution pH, gas velocity, and the distance between the plasma outlet and the water surface.

Ascorbate guided conversion of hydrogen peroxide to hydroxyl radical on goethite

Xiaobing Wang et al.

Summary: The addition of ascorbate reduces the conversion of H2O2 to O-2 and increases the conversion to (OH)-O-center dot on goethite. This is due to the efficient Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox cycle accelerated by ascorbate, resulting in abundant Fe(II) on the goethite surface favoring the conversion of H2O2 to (OH)-O-center dot. Meanwhile, decreased surface Fe(III) inhibits the conversion of H2O2 to O-2.
