Enhanced benzofluoranthrene removal in constructed wetlands with iron-modified biochar: Mediated by dissolved organic matter and microbial response

Yan Kang et al.

Summary: The use of iron-modified biochar in constructed wetlands enhances the removal of benzofluoranthrene and ammonium by increasing microbial degradation. The iron-mediated biochar increases dissolved organic carbon content and enriches microbial abundance and key enzymes involved in PAH degradation. Fate of PAHs in treated wastewater reused as irrigation water: Environmental risks in water-soil-ryegrass multimedia system

Jiaman Ma et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the fate, bio-metabolism, and environmental risk of low-ring and high-ring PAHs under long-term irrigation with micro-polluted treated wastewater. Results showed that high-ring PAHs had higher attenuation and adsorption rates compared to low-ring PAHs, with adsorption, biodegradation, and rhizosphere effect playing significant roles in PAH reduction. Functional microorganisms like Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium, and Sphingomonas were found to be positively correlated with PAH degradation, particularly in the rhizosphere. Environmental risk prediction after ten years of irrigation indicated minimal potential risks, suggesting the feasibility of using treated wastewater for garden irrigation.

Can we use mine waste as substrate in constructed wetlands to intensify nutrient removal? A critical assessment of key removal mechanisms and long-term environmental risks

Ruigang Wang et al.

Summary: The utilization of natural ores and mine waste as substrate in constructed wetlands can enhance nutrient removal performance. However, the potential negative environmental effects of contaminants leached from mine waste are not well understood. This study investigated the long-term feasibility and key removal mechanisms of different constructed wetlands using three types of mine waste as substrates. The results showed that the addition of mine waste increased the removal of total phosphorus and total nitrogen. The higher removal of phosphorus is mainly attributed to the strong binding mechanism of phosphate with the leached oxides and hydroxides of manganese, iron, and/or aluminum. Moreover, the integration of mine waste in constructed wetlands stimulated biofilm establishment and enriched the relative abundance of key functional genes related to the nitrogen cycle.

Xinhan Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of root exudates on the dynamics of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in a simulated wetland sediment system, and finds that the priming effects of root exudates accelerate the transformation and depuration of BaP in wetlands. These priming effects promote the removal processes of BaP, reducing its half-life and lowering its potential hazard in wetlands.

Hong-Yu Jin et al.

Summary: Conductive materials affect the extra-cellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in anaerobic digestion, leading to an increase or decrease in methane production and changes in the content, composition, and characteristics of EPSs. There is a positive correlation between the maximal methane production potential (Pmax) and the ratio of proteins to polysaccharides (PN/PS) in EPSs, as well as fluorescent substances. EPSs are also related to microbial communities in anaerobic digestion.

Benzo[a]pyrene-Environmental Occurrence, Human Exposure, and Mechanisms of Toxicity

Bozena Bukowska et al.

Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) is a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that is commonly found in the environment and human surroundings. It has been shown to have toxic effects on DNA, reproduction, neurology, and development. The metabolism of B[a]P is mediated by cytochrome P450 (CYP P450) and its polymorphism determines the sensitivity to B[a]P. Additionally, B[a]P may facilitate the replication of viruses.

Ultrasensitive detection of Hg(II) by small-sized Mn3O4 loaded on g-C3N4 nanosheets: Heterojunction facilitates electron transfer and Mn(II)/Mn(III)/Mn(IV) cycle

Zheng Liu et al.

Summary: A Mn3O4/g-C3N4 composite with small-sized Mn3O4 particles and high proportion of Mn(II) and Mn(III) was prepared, showing excellent performance in detecting mercury ions. The dispersion of Mn3O4 on g-C3N4 solves the agglomeration issue and improves the conductivity. g-C3N4 provides more adsorption sites, while the heterojunction formed in the composite accelerates electron transfer and promotes the redox of mercury ions.

Shifts in a Phenanthrene-Degrading Microbial Community are Driven by Carbohydrate Metabolism Selection in a Ryegrass Rhizosphere

Longfei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of ryegrass in phenanthrene degradation in soils using DNA stable isotope probing (SIP) and metagenomics to unravel potential explanations for conflicting results in phytoremediation studies. The research found that ryegrass can enhance phenanthrene biodegradation efficiency and impact microbial community structure in the rhizosphere through carbohydrate metabolism, particularly fumaric acid. This suggests that rhizosphere effect on phenanthrene degradation efficiency may depend on the presence of active degraders with advantages in carbohydrate and fumaric acid metabolism.
