Bifunctional Modification Enhances Lithium Extraction from Brine Using a Titanium-Based Ion Sieve Membrane Electrode

Junxiang Zhang et al.

Summary: Researchers designed a membrane electrode with conductive and hydrophilic bifunctionality based on H2TiO3 ion sieve (HTO). Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was combined with the ion sieve to improve electrical conductivity, while tannic acid (TA) was polymerized on the surface to enhance hydrophilicity. These modifications improved the electrochemical performance of the electrode and facilitated ion migration and adsorption. The modified electrode exhibited excellent selectivity for Na+/Li+ and Mg2+/Li+ separation, as well as good cycling stability.

Lithium extraction from geothermal brine by granulated HTO titanium-based adsorbent with block-co-polymer poly (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVAL) as binder

Chunyao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new type of highly selective H2TiO3 lithium-ion sieve (LIS) based adsorbent spheres using a block co-polymer poly (ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVAL). The spherical EVAL-HTO has a controlled porous structure and pore connectivity, providing robust mechanical strength and access by aqueous brine. The EVAL-HTO showed great potential as a lithium adsorbent, with adsorption equilibrium following Langmuir adsorption and adsorption kinetics conforming to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The excellent selectivity of EVAL-HTO between Li+ and other contaminant ions, except Ca2+, indicates the possibility of obtaining purified lithium chemicals.

Lithium-rich geothermal brines in Europe: An up-date about geochemical characteristics and implications for potential Li resources

Bernard Sanjuan et al.

Summary: Lithium is a strategic metal with increasing worldwide demand, especially for electric vehicle batteries. This study examines the possibility of extracting lithium from deep European geothermal fluids. The research identifies six areas, including Italy, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, with deep fluids containing high lithium concentrations. The study concludes that lithium concentrations depend not only on temperature and fluid salinity but also on reservoir rock type and mineralogical constituents. The Upper Rhine Graben along the French/German border is considered the most promising zone for geothermal lithium exploitation.
