A comprehensive review of solar-driven desalination systems and its advancements

Summary: The rapid increase in human population and the scarcity of natural water resources have led to a shortage of fresh drinkable water. Saline water desalination is the best solution, but it requires huge amounts of energy supplied by fossil fuels. This review focuses on the combination of desalination systems and solar energy technologies as an alternative way to extract fresh water using renewable energy. The review also provides an overview of different desalination technologies and discusses the principles, energy, exergy, and economic analysis of solar thermal desalination systems. The challenges and major issues of such systems are outlined as well.

3D porous N-doped lignosulfonate/graphene oxide aerogel for efficient solar steam generation and desalination

Summary: Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is a promising approach to address water scarcity. A 3D-porous N-doped lignosulfonate/graphene oxide aerogel (NLGA) was prepared by a one-step hydrothermal method. The NLGA showed excellent evaporation rate and efficiency under 1 sun illumination, surpassing foam-based solar evaporators. It also maintained stable evaporation rate without salt accumulation due to its rich-pore structure and superhydrophilicity.

Recent developments in materials science and chemistry have made it possible to remove cadmium using nanomaterials, which have large specific surface areas and multiple functions. Adsorption by nanomaterials is acknowledged as a viable and cost-effective method for removing dangerous metals from contaminated water. This paper examines the benefits and drawbacks of using nanomaterials for cadmium removal, as well as their production, potential effects on human health, and future research directions.

A robust and 3D-printed solar evaporator based on naturally occurring molecules

Nanocellulose-based aerogels for water purification: A review

Summary: Water purification using thin membranes at high pressures through adsorption and size exclusion is a widely used mechanism due to its simplicity and enhanced efficiency. Aerogels, with their unmatched adsorption/absorption capacity, highly porous 3D structure, and high surface area, have the potential to replace conventional thin membranes. Nanocellulose-based aerogels have been employed in the removal of dyes, metal ions, and oils/organic solvents, and recent updates on their adsorption/absorption performance enhancement are discussed. The future prospects of nanocellulose aerogels with emerging materials such as chitosan and graphene oxide are also compared.

Mechanically robust composite hydrogels for high performance solar driven interface evaporation

A portable high-performance self-insulated solar evaporator based on wooden sponge for seawater desalination and wastewater purification

Summary: Despite the abundance of water on Earth, there is still a scarcity of clean water. However, a portable solar-powered device has been developed to address this issue, by utilizing a novel wooden material coated with carbonized carbon dots (CCD), which acts as a self-insulated steam generator. This device can generate steam at a high rate and has an energy efficiency of 85.0% under sunlight exposure. With this unique design, travelers can easily obtain clean water by purifying seawater and wastewater as long as the sun shines.

Marine biomass metal-organic framework hybrid evaporators for efficient solar water purification

Summary: In this study, a versatile solar evaporator was designed and fabricated by confining black melanin nanoparticles obtained from Lophius litulon skin into a MIL-53(Fe) framework. The obtained evaporator showed high evaporation rate and energy efficiency under sunlight, as well as long-term salt-rejection properties. The estimated materials costs were low and the clean water yield meets the daily drinking water requirements for four adults. Additionally, the photothermal evaporator demonstrated excellent antibacterial property, high biocompatibility, and recyclability. This study provides a new path for large-scale utilization of marine biomass materials in designing affordable, scalable, and recyclable interfacial solar evaporation devices to produce drinkable water.

Lignin-modulated magnetic negatively charged Fe3O4@lignin nanospheres in removing cationic dyes from wastewater

Summary: In recent decades, the generation of wastewater containing toxic dyes in industrial processes has become a significant issue. To address the complex separation process of conventional adsorbents, Fe3O4@lignin/phenolic resins nanospheres (Fe3O4@LPF) were synthesized using a simple reverse-phase emulsion polymerization method. The Fe3O4@40%LPF exhibited excellent adsorption performance, with a dye removal ratio of 99.80% for RB at 50 degrees C and a maximum experimental adsorption capacity of 41.03 mg/g for RB. The adsorbent also demonstrated good stability and can be considered a high-efficiency and economic option.

A biomass-based bilayer aerogel for efficient solar-driven steam production and electricity generation

Summary: Solar-driven interfacial evaporation offers potential for desalination and electricity generation. Researchers have constructed an all-in-one bilayer aerogel evaporator using cellulose and lignin as raw materials, achieving simultaneous solar desalination and electricity generation. With its unique hierarchical architecture, superior solar absorption and structural stability, the evaporator demonstrates excellent evaporation performance and salt resistance, reaching an evaporation rate of 3.9 kg m(-2)h(-1) and a solar-to-vapor conversion efficiency of 95.8% under 1 sun irradiation, while stably outputting 77 mV. By connecting multiple evaporators in series, the system can generate sufficient fresh water and store generated electricity for small electronic devices.

Cellulose-based evaporator with dual boost of water transportation and photothermal conversion for highly solar-driven evaporation

Summary: In this study, a 2D evaporator with cellulose nanofiber (CNF), Ti3C2Tx (MXene), and polydopamine modified lignin (PL) was prepared by layer-by-layer self-assembly and freeze-drying methods. The resulting f-CMPL aerogel film exhibited a highly interconnected porous structure and enhanced hydrophilicity. Benefiting from these favorable properties, the f-CMPL aerogel film showed enhanced light absorption performance and higher evaporation rate. Weaving Hyper-crosslinked Polymer from Alkaline Lignin for Adsorption of Organic Dyes from Wastewater
