Metal-organic framework-based smart nanoplatforms for biosensing, drug delivery, and cancer theranostics

A customized MOF-polymer composite for rapid gold extraction from water matrices

Summary: To promote the recovery of targeted metals like gold from electronic waste, a highly porous metal-organic framework (MOF)-polymer composite called BUT-33-poly(para-phenylenediamine) (PpPD) was evaluated for its gold extraction capabilities. It demonstrated high extraction efficiency (>99%) and competitive capacity (1600 mg/g) within seconds, as well as long-term stability and recyclability. The material's high porosity and redox adsorption mechanism were identified as key factors contributing to its excellent performance. Additionally, the accumulation of metallic gold nanoparticles in the material made it an efficient catalyst.

Gold recovery from E-waste using freestanding nanopapers of cellulose and ionic covalent organic frameworks

A 2D mesoporous hydrazone covalent organic framework for selective detection and ultrafast recovery of Au(III) from electronic waste

Summary: In this study, a two-dimensional mesoporous fluorescent covalent organic framework named TY-Hz COF was developed for simultaneous detection and recovery of Au(III). Potential driving forces and probabilistic health risks of heavy metal accumulation in the soils from an e-waste area, southeast China

Long-Range alignment of liquid crystalline small molecules on Metal-Organic framework micropores by physical anchoring

Gold recovery from waste printed circuit boards of mobile phones by using microwave pyrolysis and hydrometallurgical methods

Summary: The study successfully recovered gold from waste printed circuit boards through processes such as microwave pyrolysis, acid leaching, solvent extraction, and oxidative precipitation. Microwave pyrolysis prevented gold loss, and perchloric acid exhibited higher selectivity for gold recovery.

Exceptionally amino-quantitated 3D MOF@CNT-sponge hybrid for efficient and selective recovery of Au(III) and Pd(II)

Summary: Designing materials for selective recovery of precious metals is critical in response to the economic and environmental concerns caused by electronic waste outbreaks. In this study, high-performance hybrid materials (MCNTs) based on hexaaminobenzene metal-organic framework (HAB-MOF) and carbon nano-tube (CNT) sponge were introduced for selective recovery of Au(III) and Pd(II). The synthesized 30-MCNT demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity for Au(III) and Pd(II) among all reported MOFs, making it a benchmark material in the MOF family. A sustainable approach for material and metal recovery from E-waste using subcritical to supercritical methanol

On the implementation of the circular economy route for E-waste management: A critical review and an analysis for the case of the state of Kuwait

Summary: Electronic waste is a major environmental concern due to its large volume, high generation rate and toxic environmental burdens. This manuscript reviews the state-of-the-art technologies and techniques for segregating, recovering and recycling e-waste, with a specific focus on the valorization of e-plastics and e-metals. It also discusses the environmental aspects and regulations/legislations related to e-waste management, as well as the potential for implementing these technologies in Kuwait. The article highlights the waste accumulation problem in Kuwait and estimates the potential revenue from valorizing recovered plastics, iron and glass from e-waste.

Selective and rapid extraction of trace amount of gold from complex liquids with silver(I)-organic frameworks

Summary: In this study, we report the synthesis of two vinylene-linked two-dimensional silver(I)-organic frameworks via Knoevenagel condensation, which enable selective sensing and adsorption of ultra-trace amounts of gold from complex liquids. These materials exhibit low limit of detection, excellent selectivity and reusability.

A Series of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Adsorption of Halogenated Volatile Organic Compounds

Summary: A series of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized and examined for their adsorption performance of 1,2-dichloroethane. The results showed that three MOFs (Mg, Co, Ni) exhibited high saturated capacities and outperformed other porous materials. Co-MOF-184 demonstrated the highest adsorption saturated capacity and isosteric heat of adsorption.

Summary: Laser treatment of paper-based materials offers a sustainable and precise method for fabricating flexible, mobile, and low-energy powered electronics. It enables the patterning of graphene-based circuits for various emerging electronic applications. Paper, chosen as a substrate for these electronics, brings new design possibilities due to its thin, lightweight, biodegradable, and mechanically stable nature, and its ability to be assembled into different forms using traditional techniques.

Recent progress in heavy metals extraction from phosphoric acid: A short review

Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles from Gold Coatings Recovered from E-Waste Processors

Summary: This work presents a method for synthesizing Au nanoparticles from gold coatings recovered from processor pins. The method has significant advantages, including lower waste generation, easy post-treatment and purification, and high yields. The synthesized Au nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy, showing similar characteristics to those obtained with Aldrich's reagent. This study suggests a new field of research called hydronanometallurgy, where recycling procedures are improved by considering the size and shape of the metals to be recovered.

Summary: An efficient and redox-active adsorbent (UiO-66-BTU) was successfully synthesized by modifying Zr-MOF with bisthiourea for gold recovery in aqueous solution. The adsorbent showed significant adsorption ability and high selectivity towards Au(III) in actual wastewater, attributed to various interactions and redox reactions. The reduction of Au(III) to metallic gold for recycling products using UiO-66-BTU demonstrated great potential for gold recycling in industrial practice.

Metal exposure of workers during recycling of electronic waste: a cross-sectional study in sheltered workshops in Germany
