Separation of high added-value chemical compositions derived from biomass pyrolysis liquid via sequential multi-step pH adjustment

Genmao Guo et al.

Summary: To solve the complexity of pyrolysis liquid components, a new method combining sequential multi-step pH adjustment and organic solvent extraction was developed to separate the chemical components of crude pyrolysis liquid. Acids and phenolics were the major constituents, with ketones enriched at high pH, methoxyphenols separated at moderate pH, phenol and maltol found at lower pH levels, acetic acid being the most abundant compound at slightly lower pH, and 2-methyl-propanoic acid anhydride as the main compound at the lowest pH. The DPPH free radical scavenging rate showed positive correlation with phenolic components and negative correlation with acid components, with the highest scavenging rate obtained at pH 11.

Synergistic effect of water-ethanol-formic acid for the depolymerization of industrial waste (black liquor) lignin to phenolic monomers

Masud Rana et al.

Summary: The study investigated the synergistic effect of a mixture solvent of water-ethanol-formic acid for the depolymerization of concentrated acid hydrolysis lignin to produce phenolic monomers. The highest bio-oil yield was obtained at 330 degrees C for 2 h with a water-ethanol-formic acid ratio of 1:1:0.4. Ethanol and formic acid played important roles in increasing solubility and preventing repolymerization, resulting in significant production of phenolic monomers in the bio-oils.
