Experimental and modeling investigations on the unexpected hydrogen sulfide rebound in a sewer receiving nitrate addition: Mechanism and solution

Zhensheng Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of sulfide rebound after nitrate addition in a lab-scale sewer system. The results show that nitrate addition exacerbates sulfide pollution instead of controlling it. The mechanism of sulfide rebound can be categorized into short-term and long-term effects, with the accumulation of intermediate elemental sulfur in the biofilm being the main cause of short-term sulfide rebound. The presence of nitrate promotes microbial proliferation, biological denitrification, and sulfur production in the biofilm, weakening the effect of nitrate on sulfide control.

The potent effects of polyoxometalates (POMs) on controlling sulfide and methane production from sewers

Haixiao Guo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that the use of Polyoxometalates (POMs) as a specific inhibitor of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) can effectively control sulfide and methane production in sewers. The one-time dosing of POMs significantly reduced sulfide production and prolonged the recovery time. When combined with a low level of free nitrous acid, POMs also showed improved methane control and reduced organic carbon loss. Furthermore, the use of POMs had a beneficial effect on downstream nitrogen removal. Mechanistic studies revealed that POMs disrupted biofilms and inhibited key enzymatic activities, leading to suppressed microbial metabolic activities.

Zigeng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study explores the molecular mechanism of biopolymer enhancing anti-erosion by using the environmentally-friendly oxidant potassium ferrate (PF) to treat sediments. The results show that PF treatment improves sediment erosion capability and weakens adhesion, thereby enhancing the anti-erosion properties of sediments.

Simultaneous control of sulfide and methane in sewers achieved by a physical approach targeting dominant active zone in sediments

Daheng Ren et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel physical control approach called intermittent surface sediment flushing to address multiple issues caused by sewer sediments. The results show that flushing the surface sediments immediately reduces sulfide and methane production, and it takes about a week for the activities to recover to 50% of the maximum. Compared to chemical dosing methods, this approach greatly reduces operating costs and environmental impact.

Effect of external carbon addition and enrofloxacin on the denitrification and microbial community of sequencing batch membrane reactor treating synthetic mariculture wastewater

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: The effect of sequencing batch membrane bioreactor (SMBR) on external carbon addition and enrofloxacin in treating synthetic mariculture wastewater was investigated. It was found that anoxic/anaerobic conditions and low COD/TN can improve ammonia oxidation and achieve high NH4+-N removal efficiency. Adding external carbon and creating an anoxic environment can provide a suitable condition for denitrifying bacteria. Enrofloxacin was found to promote TN removal efficiency and have a significant impact on specific bacteria.
