Ferrate pretreatment-anaerobic fermentation enhances medium-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge: Performance and mechanisms

Yufen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a promising ferrate-based technique was proposed to enhance the production of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) from waste activated sludge (WAS). The technique accelerates the disintegration and transformation of WAS, and eliminates the competitive inhibition of methanogens, resulting in a significant increase in MCFAs production. Mechanism exploration shows that ferrate effectively destroys EPS and cytoderm in WAS, allowing for the transfer of organics to soluble phase and intermediates. Additionally, ferrate facilitates hydrolysis, acidification, and chain elongation (CE) while suppressing methanogenesis, promoting the conversion of intermediates to MCFAs. Furthermore, ferrate pretreatment screens key microorganisms and up-regulates functional genes involved in CE pathways, providing potential electron shuttles for chain elongation.

A review on microalgal-bacterial co-culture: The multifaceted role of beneficial bacteria towards enhancement of microalgal metabolite production

C. Y. Tong et al.

Summary: Mass microalgal-bacterial co-cultures have emerged as a promising approach for optimizing high-value metabolite production in microalgae. However, the detailed mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of bacteria on microalgal growth and metabolism are still limited. This review sheds light on the mutualistic interactions between bacteria and microalgae, focusing on the chemical exchange in the phycosphere. Various chemical mediators, such as photosynthetic oxygen, N-acyl-homoserine lactone, siderophore, and vitamin B12, were identified to elucidate the cascading effects of bacteria on microalgal metabolites. The review also discusses the application of bacterial-mediated cell autolysis and bio-flocculants for enhancing soluble microalgal metabolites and biomass harvesting. Additionally, it explores enzyme-based communication through metabolic engineering and provides recommendations for stimulating microalgal metabolite production. Incorporating the multifaceted role of beneficial bacteria will be crucial for the development of algal biotechnology.

Zero valent iron catalyzing sulfite improves the quality and quantity of short-chain fatty acids from anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge

Xuran Liu et al.

Summary: This study proposes an environmentally friendly strategy using zero valent iron (ZVI) activating sulfite pretreatment to enhance short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production from anaerobic fermentation of sewage sludge. The results showed that ZVI-sulfite pretreatment significantly increased SCFAs production and acetate proportion. Mechanism analysis revealed that ZVI-sulfite pretreatment accelerated sludge-floc disintegration and provided more easily- and bio-available substances for functional anaerobes. The pretreatment also enriched functional anaerobes related to hydrolysis, acidogenesis, and acetogenesis, and boosted the functional genes abundance involved in butyrate and acetate formation pathways.

Unveiling the roles of biofilm in reducing N2O emission in a nitrifying integrated fixed-film activated sludge (IFAS) system

Yanying He et al.

Summary: This study aims to uncover the roles of biofilm in reducing N2O emission in a nitrifying IFAS system, using advanced technologies such as N2O microsensor and site-preference analysis. The biofilm was found to reduce N2O emission by inhibiting nitrite accumulation and promoting endogenous denitrification. It also reduced N2O emission by decreasing the dissolved oxygen level. The presence of biofilm in the IFAS system resulted in significantly lower N2O emissions compared to the solo sludge flocs, and this can be attributed to the high microbial diversity and unique enzyme composition of the biofilm.
