Effect of granular activated carbon adsorption and size of microbial aggregates in inoculum on stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer during anaerobic digestion of fat, oil, and grease

Weijia Xu et al.

Summary: The effect of granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption and size of microbial aggregates in inoculum on stimulating direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) during anaerobic digestion of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) was investigated. The study found that more long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) were adsorbed on GAC in the reactor with smaller aggregates, resulting in a 57% decrease in methane production compared to the reactor with larger aggregates. Furthermore, adsorption of unsaturated LCFAs on GAC was found to hinder DIET and modify the microbial community structure.

Investigating the role of different materials supplementation in anaerobic digestion of kitchen waste: Performance and microbial community dynamics

Fengping Hu et al.

Summary: “This study investigated the performance and microbial community dynamics in an anaerobic digestion system using different materials. The results showed that bentonite with high grease adsorption and alkaline properties improved biogas production and organic removal efficiencies. However, activated carbon and zero-valent iron inhibited biogas production from kitchen waste. Microbial community analysis revealed increased hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis with the addition of an additive. Bentonite increased the composition and diversity of archaea and bacteria, while biochar enriched bacteria capable of electron transfer. These findings provide a research basis for evaluating the influence of exogenous additives on kitchen waste anaerobic digestion.”
