Enhanced membrane fouling control through self-forming dynamic membrane and sponge-wrapped membrane: A novel membrane bioreactor

S. Nagalakshmi et al.

Summary: Membrane technology is advantageous in wastewater treatment, but fouling hinders its widespread use. In this study, a novel method combining self-forming dynamic membrane (SFDM) with a sponge-wrapped membrane bioreactor was used to control membrane fouling. The performance of this Novel-MBR was compared to a conventional membrane bioreactor (CMBR) operated under similar conditions.

Anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge using anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor under various sludge composition and organic loading rates

Yeelyung Kwon et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of sludge compositions and organic loading rates (OLRs) on stable biogas production during sludge digestion. The highest average methane production rate of 0.7 L/L & BULL;d is achieved when the OLR, hydraulic retention time, WAS volume fraction, and FOS/TAC ratio are 5.0 g COD/L & BULL;d, 12 days, 0.75, and 0.32, respectively. An increase in OLR promotes bacterial and archaeal abundance and specific methanogenic activity. These results can be applied to the design and operation of sludge digestion for stable, high-rate biogas recovery.

Enhanced production of short-chain fatty acids from sludge by thermal hydrolysis and acidogenic fermentation for organic resource recovery

Lei Wen et al.

Summary: This research investigated the use of thermal hydrolysis (TH) as a pretreatment to enhance fermentation and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production from waste sludge. The results showed that TH pretreatment promoted rapid abiotic hydrolysis and increased the production of SCFAs during sludge fermentation. Furthermore, the combination of TH and alkali pretreatment resulted in even higher SCFA production and shorter fermentation time. Microbial community analysis revealed that the microbial consortia in the TH&Alk-FM process performed better in fermentation and SCFA production compared to the NT-FMpH10 process.

Impact of thermal pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of dewatered sludge from municipal and industrial wastewaters and its economic feasibility

Gi-Beom Kim et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effect of thermal pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of dewatered sludge. The results showed that thermal pretreatment at 140 degrees C for 3 h achieved the highest biomethane yield. The study also found that thermal pretreatment promoted the growth of hydrolytic bacteria and enhanced the interspecies transfer of H-2 and electrons. The most economical pretreatment condition was determined to be 60 degrees C for 3 h.

Enhanced sludge digestion using anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor: Effects of hydraulic retention time

Wei Wu et al.

Summary: The performance of anaerobic digestion can be improved by decoupling solid retention time and hydraulic retention time. This study focused on the effects of hydraulic retention time and found that reducing the time led to increased solids concentration, improved microbial communities, and enhanced energy recovery from methane.

Effect of low-thermal pretreatment on the methanogenic performance and microbiome population of continuous high-solid anaerobic digester treating dewatered sludge

Gi-Beom Kim et al.

Summary: Low-thermal pretreatment of undigested and dewatered sludge at 10% total solids improved net energy production, sludge treatment efficiency, and digestion stability in a lab-scale anaerobic bioreactor. The highest biomethane yield and production rate were achieved at an SRT of 16 days, with a shift in methanogenic population from hydrogenotrophic to acetoclastic. This strategy could be a feasible approach for managing sludge from small wastewater treatment plants.

Maximizing the energy potential of urban sludge treatment: An experimental study and a scenario-based energy analysis focusing on anaerobic digestion with ultrasound pretreatment and sludge combustion

Emrehan Berkay Celebi et al.

Summary: Combustion and anaerobic digestion are effective methods for sludge treatment with their own advantages. Laboratory experiments showed that ultrasound pretreatment can increase the soluble COD and biogas production of sludge, while reducing the calorific value.

Anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge using dynamic membrane at varying substrate concentration reveals new insight towards methanogenic pathway and biofilm formation

Roent Dune A. Cayetano et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the benefits of biomass retention through dynamic membrane (DM) for stable performance of AnDMBR treating waste activated sludge, with an observed shift in archaeal population and functional gene expression at higher substrate concentrations. The presence of glycosyltransferase encoding genes in the biofilm formation process and the increase in average particle size distribution suggests the potential for high-rate treatment of waste activated sludge using an AnDMBR system.

Semi-continuous anaerobic digestion of secondary sludge with free ammonia pretreatment: Focusing on volatile solids destruction, dewaterability, pathogen removal and its implications

Huan Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that pretreatment of secondary sludge with free ammonia enhanced volatile solids destruction and methane production in semi-continuous anaerobic digestion systems. The FA pretreatment also improved sludge dewaterability and pathogen removal efficiency, while reducing the volume of dewatered sludge and overall cost. These findings suggest a promising strategy to enhance sludge reduction in anaerobic digestion processes.
