Do microplastics affect sulfamethoxazole sorption in soil? Experiments on polymers, ionic strength and fulvic acid

Ben Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of microplastics and sulfamethoxazole on the adsorption behavior in the soil environment. The results showed that the dosage of microplastics affected the adsorption rate and capacity of sulfamethoxazole in soil particles. Environmental factors such as salinity and calcium ion concentration also influenced the adsorption behavior. Additionally, the addition of fulvic acid inhibited the adsorption of sulfamethoxazole.

Vivianite-induced peroxymonosulfate activation for containment removal under dark conditions: Performance, mechanism and regeneration

Qi Li et al.

Summary: The performance and intrinsic mechanism of vivianite in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutant degradation were comprehensively investigated. Vivianite efficiently activated PMS to degrade pharmaceutical pollutants, with higher reaction rate constant compared to magnetite and siderite. Various processes including SO4 center dot-, (OH)-O-center dot, Fe(IV), and electron transfer were involved in the vivianite-PMS system, with SO4 center dot- identified as the major contributor to pollutant degradation. Mechanistic explorations revealed that vivianite could bind PMS and rapidly activate it due to its strong electron-donating ability. Furthermore, vivianite could be efficiently regenerated through chemical or biological reduction. This study highlights an alternative application of vivianite beyond phosphorus recovery.

Synthesis of nanocrystalline cellulose/hydroxyapatite nanocomposites for the efficient removal of chlortetracycline hydrochloride in aqueous medium

Yanru Jin et al.

Summary: This article investigates the possibility of using NCC/HAP composites as adsorbents to remove CTC·HCl from water. The experiments showed high removal rates and synergistic effects of NCC and HAP on CTC·HCl adsorption. The study suggests that NCC/HAP has promising applicability for environmental remediation of antibiotics in aqueous media.

Simultaneous nanocatalytic surface activation of pollutants and oxidants for highly efficient water decontamination

Ying-Jie Zhang et al.

Summary: Removal of organic micropollutants from water through advanced oxidation processes is hindered by excessive energy and/or chemical input, as well as the generation of large amounts of residuals. The authors propose a new water purification technology called the direct oxidative transfer process (DOTP) that can achieve complete and efficient decontamination at low oxidant dosage. DOTP differs from traditional methods in pollutant removal behavior and mechanisms, and offers favorable features such as low energy consumption, no residual byproducts, and robust performance in real environmental matrices.

Roles of humic acid on vivianite crystallization in heterogeneous nucleation for phosphorus recovery

Qi Li et al.

Summary: This study found that the presence of humic acid increases the size of vivianite crystals during crystallization, resulting in better phosphorus recovery from wastewater. The study also discovered that aliphatic carboxyl groups in humic acid can lower the nucleation rate and increase the growth rate of vivianite crystals, leading to larger crystals.

Organic matter affects phosphorus recovery during vivianite crystallization

Changyu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of organic matter on vivianite-mediated phosphorus recovery, finding that humic acid and sodium alginate inhibited P recovery efficiency and led to a decrease in vivianite crystal size, while bovine serum albumin and sodium alginate affected the aggregated form of vivianite crystals.

A novel mesoporous Hydroxyapatite@Montmorillonite hybrid composite for high-performance removal of emerging Ciprofloxacin antibiotic from water: Integrated experimental and Monte Carlo computational assessment

M. Laabd et al.

Summary: This study reported the effective removal of Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) antibiotic from aqueous solutions using a novel Hydroxyapatite@Montmorillonite (HAP@Mt) hybrid composite synthesized via a facile co-precipitation route. The composite showed a high adsorption capacity for Cipro, controlled mainly by electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and n-It electron donor/acceptor interactions. Monte Carlo/SA simulations provided atomic-level insights on the interactions between Cipro molecule and HAP@Mt surface.
