Numerical simulation of gas hydrate production in shenhu area using depressurization: The effect of reservoir permeability heterogeneity

Kunpeng Xue et al.

Summary: An accurate description of reservoir characteristics is crucial for the precise prediction of gas production from natural gas hydrate deposits. Previous studies assumed homogeneous permeability in large-scale NGH production cases, but this work established a multi-layered heterogeneous-permeability reservoir model and analyzed gas production behavior using the TOUGH + HY-DRATE simulator. It was found that scatter distribution of hydrate and free gas occurs in this reservoir model, and reservoirs with heterogeneous permeability perform better than homogeneous ones.

Formation mechanism of heterogeneous hydrate-bearing sediments

Xuan Kou et al.

Summary: This work aims to reveal the unaddressed formation mechanism of heterogeneous hydrate-bearing sediments (HBS) by theoretical hypothesis, model derivation, and experimental verification. The proposed kinetic model successfully predicts the formation rates of different heterogeneous HBS, and the X-ray Computed Tomography (X-CT) scans confirm the hypotheses about water migration and heterogeneous hydrate distribution. The findings provide theoretical support and research method for efficient exploitation of naturally occurring heterogeneous HBS.

New Approach for Determining the Reaction Rate Constant of Hydrate Formation via X-ray Computed Tomography

Huiyong Liang et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates have been studied for their potential applications in energy storage, gas separation, and carbon dioxide sequestration. The study presents a new method for determining the reaction rate constant of hydrate formation using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography measurements. The experimental results showed an increase in reaction rate constant with temperature, indicating an activation energy of 56.6 kJ/mol. This approach may have broader applications in studying kinetics of other gas hydrates.

Quantitative analysis of methane hydrate formation in size-varied porous media for gas storage and transportation application

Zucheng Cheng et al.

Summary: This study found that hydrate in porous media tends to grow in larger pore spaces, with formation rate and gas consumption increasing as the particle size of the porous media decreases. Due to the effects of gas diffusion - hydrate film rupture - capillary force, hydrate growth exhibits characteristics of 2nd growth.

Pore-scale analysis of relations between seepage characteristics and gas hydrate growth habit in porous sediments

Xuan Kou et al.

Summary: In this study, gas hydrate with different growth habits was synthesized in quartz sands porous media, and a modified permeability reduction model based on interconnectivity degree was proposed to estimate the permeability variation of hydrate bearing porous media. Experimental results showed that the formation and growth of gas hydrate in pores led to non-interconnected pores, limiting the validity of pore structure analysis. The modified model displayed good prediction performance for permeability estimation in gas production from hydrate-bearing sediments.

Analysis of Hydrate Heterogeneous Distribution Effects on Mechanical Characteristics of Hydrate-Bearing Sediments

Jian-Wu Liu et al.

Summary: The study showed that the heterogeneity of hydrate distribution significantly affects the mechanical parameters of hydrate-bearing sediments, including elastic modulus, shear strength, and dilation. Anisotropy of the hydrate heterogeneous distribution effect was also observed. Considering the impact of hydrate distribution heterogeneity is essential when characterizing the mechanical properties of GHBS.

Kun Wan et al.

Summary: In this study, a pilot-scale hydrate simulator with an effective volume of 117.8 L was used for the first time to investigate multifield coupling and heterogeneity during hydrate dissociation. The results show that hydrate decomposition is heterogeneous, with the most abundant hydrates in the middle of the lower layer and the longest decomposition time in the lower layer.
