Mutual boost of granulation and enrichment of anammox bacteria in an anaerobic/oxic/anoxic system as the temperature decreases when treating municipal wastewater

Liyan Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the variations in the abundance of anammox bacteria (AnAOB) and sludge form in municipal wastewater treatment systems as temperature decreased. The findings showed that granulation and enrichment of AnAOB were achieved even at low temperatures. The study highlights the prospects of anammox and granule technologies for low-temperature municipal wastewater treatment.

High adhesion ability of anammox granular microbes directly revealed by QCM-D technique

Weigang Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that EPS extraction stimulated the adherence properties of all sludge samples. Anammox consortia exhibited the highest adhesion rate and mass, forming the most compact layer on sensor surfaces both before and after EPS extraction. The high adhesion ability of anammox granules is mainly attributed to their relatively high extracellular proteins/polysaccharides ratio.

Investigation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in four types of sludge: Factors influencing EPS properties and sludge granulation

Xiaoying Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed a positive correlation between EPS content and sludge granulation, with increased protein concentration facilitating microbial aggregation and sludge granulation. Environmental factors affect the properties of EPS, with different types of sludge generating varying levels of EPS and protein concentrations.
