Effects of High Irradiance and Low Water Temperature on Photoinhibition and Repair of Photosystems in Marimo (Aegagropila linnaei) in Lake Akan, Japan

Akina Obara et al.

Summary: This study investigates the photoinhibition of the green alga Aegagropila linnaei, also known as marimo, in Lake Akan, Japan. It is found that at low temperatures, marimo is protected from strong sunlight by ice coverage, but the disappearance of ice due to global warming may pose a threat. The study reveals that photoinhibition occurs in the photosystem II (PSII) of A. linnaei at 2 degrees C, with PSII efficiency not fully recovering after prolonged high-light treatments.

Effects of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen transformation and antibiotic resistance genes in short-cut nitrification and denitrification process treating mariculture wastewater

Ting Li et al.

Summary: The influence of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on short-cut nitrification and denitrification (SCND) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) was evaluated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). SMX dosage significantly affected the removal efficiency of NH4+-N and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN). The presence of SMX altered the microbial composition, leading to changes in dominant microorganisms and an increase in antibiotic resistance bacteria (ARB). 2.0 mg/L SMX induced the emergence of alternative nitrogen removal pathways and influenced the expression of nitrification and carbon source metabolism related genes, as well as the diversity and relative percentage of ARGs.

How weak static magnetic field contributes to rapid granulation and better performance of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge?

Yuqing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study applied a static magnetic field to accelerate the granulation of microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) in photo-sequencing batch reactors. The magnetic field significantly promoted microbial growth, sludge settleability, and granule density, leading to rapid granulation and improved performance in MBGS. The magnetic field also enhanced nitrogen removal and increased the specific oxygen production rate and specific oxygen uptake rate in MBGS. The accumulation of metal ions, production of extracellular polymeric substances, and enrichment of functional bacteria and phototrophs contributed to the successful granulation of MBGS. This study provides an effective and environmentally-friendly method for rapid cultivation of MBGS.
