Degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) by water falling film DBD Plasma/Persulfate: Reactive species identification and their role in SMX degradation

Kefeng Shang et al.

Summary: The study shows that persulfate can enhance the degradation of sulfamethoxazole in a water falling film dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor, with PMS performing better than PDS. Increasing the applied voltage, solution pH, and PMS/PDS concentration promotes SMX degradation. The reactive species generated from the activation of PMS/PDS by discharge plasma play a key role in SMX degradation, with center dot OH and SO4 center dot- being particularly important.

The Effect of Discharge Frequency of a Gas-Liquid Plasma Reactor on Bulk Liquid Transport and Removal of Organic Contaminants

Mikhail Vasilev et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of discharge frequency on the degradation of organic compounds in a gas-liquid plasma reactor. It is found that the discharge frequency controls the compound degradation via multiple mechanisms. The results of this study have significant implications for the design of chemical reactors in water treatment applications.

State of the art and perspectives about non-thermal plasma applications for the removal of PFAS in water

Davide Palma et al.

Summary: The urgent need for innovative tertiary treatments to remove emerging contaminates from wastewater, especially highly recalcitrant compounds like PFAS, has driven the development of non-thermal plasma (NTP) treatment technology. This technology generates reactive species capable of mineralizing stable and recalcitrant compounds. This review examines the physics of NTP, different proposed processes and reactors, reactive species generated during the process, and its applications in treating Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) with a focus on PFAS removal. The effects of natural components of water on the efficiency of NTP-based treatment are also discussed, and conclusions about the future of this technology are drawn based on existing literature and available market technologies.

The scaling of kinetic and transport behaviors in the solution-phase chemistry of a plasma-liquid interface

Hernan E. Delgado et al.

Summary: The study reveals that a characteristic transition time can be determined through mathematical analysis for the transition from efficient scavenger reduction or oxidation to lower efficiencies. When scavenger kinetics are faster than second-order recombination, this characteristic time scales proportionally with scavenger diffusivity and the square of scavenger bulk concentration, and inversely with the square of the electron flux.

Plasma-driven solution electrolysis

Peter J. Bruggeman et al.

Summary: Plasma interacting with liquids can generate a highly reactive liquid layer, enabling selective, efficient, and green chemical transformations and new material synthesis. PDSE can be seen as replacing a metal electrode in an electrolytic cell with a gas phase plasma, which is crucial for driving transformational advances in PDSE.

Plasma-droplet interaction study to assess transport limitations and the role of OH, O,H,O2(a 1Δg),O3, He(23 S) and Ar(1s 5) in formate decomposition

Gaurav Nayak et al.

Summary: The study quantified the role of different gas mixtures in initiating reactions in water microdroplets through plasma interaction, aiming to effectively decompose organic pollutants in water. By analyzing the impact of various short-lived radicals on formate decomposition in droplets, the study revealed the importance of gas phase .OH flux and electron/ion-induced reactions in the process.
