Investigation on the Amino Acid-Assisted CO2 Hydrates: A Promising Step Toward Hydrate-based Decarbonization

Viphada Yodpetch et al.

Summary: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a promising method for reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels. Amino acids, such as leucine, methionine, and valine, were used as promoters in CO2 hydrate formation. Different concentrations of amino acids had varying effects on the rate of hydrate formation. The use of amino acids with the hybrid combinatorial reactor (HCR) approach shows promise for CCS applications.

Rapid and high hydrogen storage in epoxycyclopentane hydrate at moderate pressure

Siyuan Chen et al.

Summary: Investigated several methods to improve the hydrogen storage capacity and rate in epoxycyclopentane (ECP) hydrates at moderate pressure. Found that ECP hydrate particles promote hydrate formation and decreasing particle size increases gas storage capacity and rate. Dispersing ECP hydrate particles on stainless steel mesh further increases gas storage capacity and rate. These findings provide fundamental insights into clathrate hydrate-based H2 storage technology development.

Coupling Amino Acid with THF for the Synergistic Promotion of CO2 Hydrate Micro Kinetics: Implication for Hydrate-Based CO2 Sequestration

Xuejian Liu et al.

Summary: CO2 capture and sequestration is the most effective technology for reducing CO2 emissions and mitigating climate change. Hydrate-based CO2 sequestration has been proposed as a method for long-term safe and stable CO2 sequestration, and it can reduce CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and achieve carbon neutrality. However, improving the formation kinetics of CO2 hydrate is a major challenge. This study identified a synergistic effect on CO2 hydrate formation when a low-dose thermodynamic promoter (THF) is coupled with an environment-friendly kinetic promoter (L-Met), providing guidance for the use of novel bio-friendly promoters.

Hydrogen storage as clathrate hydrates in the presence of 1,3-dioxolane as a dual-function promoter

Ye Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen (H-2) is becoming a key player in the clean energy portfolio as mankind transitions towards renewables and a low carbon future. The use of 1,3-dioxolane (DIOX) as a dual-function promoter for H-2-contained hydrate formation shows promise in increasing gas uptake. Experimental studies provide insight into the macro- and micro-scale properties of the system, laying a foundation for further development of hydrate-based H-2 storage technology.

Hydrate-Based Gas Storage Application Using Simulated Seawater in the Presence of a Co-Promoter: Morphology Investigation

Katipot Inkong et al.

Summary: The morphology of mixed methane-THF hydrate formation was investigated using salt water instead of pure water. The presence of copromoters affected the hydrate formation patterns. Salt water resulted in low hydrate formation kinetics while the presence of SDS significantly enhanced the kinetics. Amino acids accelerated the formation rate of hydrates but had a negligible effect on methane uptake.

Comparison of SDS and L-Methionine in promoting CO2 hydrate kinetics: Implication for hydrate-based CO2 storage

Xuejian Liu et al.

Summary: The continuously increasing CO2 emissions since industrialization has sparked widespread concerns on environmental and climate change issues. This study compared the effect of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and L-methionine ((L)-Met) on CO2 hydrate formation kinetics, and found that (L)-Met is a more effective and eco-friendly kinetic promoter than SDS. The experimental results and hydrate morphology observations provided possible explanations for the observed kinetics. A novel calculation method was developed to quantify the partition of CO2 in different phases. The reusability of (L)-Met as a CO2 hydrate kinetic promoter was also demonstrated. This study highlights the importance of finding efficient and eco-friendly technologies for CO2 sequestration.

Hydrates for cold energy storage and transport: A review

Zhenyuan Yin et al.

Summary: The energy demand for space cooling has more than tripled in the past thirty years, resulting in about 1 Gt CO2 emissions annually. The cold energy released from LNG terminals has reached a historical high, highlighting the need for suitable phase change materials (PCMs) like semiclathrate hydrates (SCHs) to improve energy efficiency in cooling processes. There is strong potential for disruptive SCH-based cooling technologies to be developed in the near future for energy efficiency improvement and environmental sustainability.
