A comprehensive review on biogas production from lignocellulosic wastes through anaerobic digestion: An insight into performance improvement strategies

Mohsen Karrabi et al.

Summary: Recently, there has been growing interest in using organic or biodegradable wastes, including lignocellulosic wastes (LWs), as renewable energy sources. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of these wastes can mitigate environmental damage and produce biogas and bioenergy, which is particularly valuable in developing countries. However, there are several challenges to overcome, such as waste floating on top of reactors, high carbon-to-nitrogen ratio (CNR), complex structure of LWs, and poor degradability due to high lignin content. These challenges can be addressed through methods like mixing in reactors, reducing CNR, balancing inoculum-to-substrate ratio (ISR), and pretreatments. This study aims to review the literature on AD of LWs, identify existing challenges, and propose strategies to improve bioenergy production from this waste.

Enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis of waste sunflower straw by clean hydrothermal pretreatment

Qizhen Yang et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal pretreatment is an effective method to improve the saccharification of lignocellulose. In this study, an efficient hydrothermal pretreatment of sunflower straw was conducted, resulting in the removal of 58.8% xylan and 33.5% lignin at a treatment temperature of 180 degrees C for 120 min and a solid-to-liquid ratio of 1:15. Various characterizations confirmed that hydrothermal pretreatment altered the surface structure and increased the accessibility to cellulase. The enzymatic saccharification of the treated sunflower straw achieved a high yield of reducing sugar and glucose and also produced xylo-oligosaccharide in the filtrate.

Optimization of binary acids pretreatment of corncob biomass for enhanced recovery of cellulose to produce bioethanol

P. Selvakumar et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that chemical pretreatment with binary acids effectively removed lignin and hemicellulose from corncob biomass, leading to increased cellulose recovery and substrate porosity. Ethanol fermentation of the hydrolysates resulted in a high bioethanol concentration. Therefore, the binary acids pretreatment can be considered as an alternative approach for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment.

Comprehensive investigation of multiples factors in sulfuric acid pretreatment on the enzymatic hydrolysis of waste straw cellulose

Yuanjie Gu et al.

Summary: Efficient enzymatic hydrolysis is crucial for cellulosic biochemical production from lignocellulosic materials, which is influenced by the complex lignin-cellulose-hemicellulose network. Acid pretreatment is preferred for herbaceous feedstocks, and an experimental study showed that classic dilute sulfuric acid pretreatment can effectively remove hemicellulose. Mathematical correlations were established between hemicellulose removal, residual cellulose enzymatic hydrolysis, crystallinity index, and enzyme accessibility of the pretreated materials, comparing linear and nonlinear kinetic models to establish the relationship through logistic equations and Allosteric sigmoidal models.
