Semi-resolved CFD-DEM simulation of fine particle migration with heat transfer in heterogeneous porous media

Guangpei Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, a kernel-based semi-resolved CFD-DEM combined with grain-scale reconstruction is developed to investigate particulate flows and heat transfer processes in porous media. The results from the improved model match better with experimental observations and analytical solutions. The influences of powder concentration, size, and matrix anisotropy on particle migration and distribution characteristics are investigated.

Improvement of the Coarse-Grained Discrete Element Method for Frictional Particles

Yaxiong Yu et al.

Summary: This study proposes two new coarsening strategies for the coarse-grained discrete element method (CGDEM) to more accurately predict granular temperature in simulations, particularly for homogeneous cooling systems (HCSs). These strategies also better reproduce time-averaged fields in bubbling fluidized beds compared to traditional strategies, highlighting the importance of considering both inelastic and frictional origins of energy dissipation in the coarsening strategy.

Direct numerical simulation of flow and heat transfer in bidisperse gas-solid systems

Zheqing Huang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the flow and heat transfer in bidisperse gas-solid systems with particle diameter ratios from 1:2 to 1:4. It was found that the overall Nusselt number can be predicted well using an appropriate equivalent diameter, and a correction to the monodisperse heat transfer correlations yielded an accurate model to predict Nusselt number for each species.
