However, low production efficiency and inherent flammability are two crucial limitations for its further application. In this study, two phosphorus-derived imidazoliums (CEPM-1 and CEPM-2) were synthesized by aqueous self-assembly and applied to flame-retardant epoxy resins (EPs). Enhancing performance of phosphorus containing vanillin-based epoxy resins by P-N non-covalently functionalized graphene oxide nanofillers

Summary: In this study, phosphorus and nitrogen-containing non-covalently functionalized graphene oxide (FGO) was synthesized via a single step process and a biobased phosphorus-containing vanillin epoxy resin (VPE) was made via a two-step process as a flame-retardant adhesive. The incorporation of FGO as reinforcement in the epoxy resin matrix improved the mechanical, thermal, and flame-retardant properties of the composite systems. The cured VPE/FGO nanocomposites exhibited excellent thermal and flame-retardant properties, with VPE containing 9 wt% FGO achieving the highest LOI value and V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. The study demonstrated a promising approach for synthesizing mechanically strong, thermally-stable, and environmentally-friendly flame-retardant bio-based composite resins.
