Flexible NiRu Systems for CO2 Methanation: From Efficient Catalysts to Advanced Dual-Function Materials

Loukia-Pantzechroula Merkouri et al.

Summary: In recent years, CO2 emissions in the atmosphere have been increasing rapidly, leading to global warming. CO2 methanation reaction is seen as a solution for this problem by converting CO2 into synthetic natural gas, or CH4. NiRu/CeAl and NiRu/CeZr have demonstrated promising activity for CO2 methanation, with NiRu/CeAl achieving near-equilibrium conversion at 350 degrees C with 100% CH4 selectivity. By adding potassium as an adsorbent, the CO2 adsorption capability of NiRu/CeAl was enhanced, allowing it to function as a dual-function material for CO2 capture and utilization, producing 0.264 mol of CH4/kg of sample from captured CO2. Time-resolved operando DRIFTS-MS measurements provided insights into the process mechanism, showing that CO2 was captured on basic sites and dissociated on metallic sites, resulting in the production of methane through two different pathways. This study highlights the potential of designing advanced dual-function materials by adding an adsorbent to an effective NiRu methanation catalyst.

Low-temperature CO2 methanation over Ru/CeO2: Investigation into Ru loadings

Chunfen Wang et al.

Summary: The in-depth study of reaction intermediates, especially metal-support interactions, has brought great promise and challenges to the application of Ru-based catalysts in CO2 methanation. Catalysts with different Ru loadings were prepared using CeO2 as the support, and it was found that 1%Ru/CeO2 showed excellent low-temperature methanation activity. The study also revealed that the concentration of oxygen vacancies and the metal-support interaction increased as the metal loading increased. In addition, the formation of CO intermediates was favored under low-temperature conditions, while the formation of HCOO* intermediates was favored under high-temperature conditions.

Catalytic performance and in situ DRIFTS studies of propane and simulated LPG steam reforming reactions on Rh nanoparticles dispersed on composite MxOy-Al2O3 (M: Ti, Y, Zr, La, Ce, Nd, Gd) supports

A. Kokka et al.

Summary: Rhodium nanoparticles dispersed on composite supports with MxOy additives were studied for propane steam reforming. It was found that the addition of MxOy promoted the intrinsic activity, with the sample containing La2O3 showing the best performance. The selectivity towards methane as a side product followed the same trend as the PSR activity, suggesting the importance of methane as a key reaction intermediate. In situ DRIFTS experiments revealed the formation of CHx species as intermediates, which could be further hydrogenated to form methane or interacted with OH groups to form formates that decompose into H-2 and COx. Rh/10%La2O3-Al2O3 and Rh/10%Gd2O3-Al2O3 catalysts were found to be promising for LPG steam reforming.

Enhanced performance and selectivity of CO2 methanation over phyllosilicate structure derived Ni-Mg/SBA-15 catalysts

Plaifa Hongmanorom et al.

Summary: Ni and Ni-Mg phyllosilicate mesoporous SBA-15 catalysts prepared via ammonia evaporation (AE) method exhibit superior catalytic performance in CO2 methanation compared to catalysts prepared via wetness impregnation (WI) method, due to enhanced metal-support interaction and weakly basic sites provided by surface hydroxyl groups. Incorporation of Mg into phyllosilicate structure increases medium basic sites, promoting monodentate formate formation and improving CO2 methanation activity. Additionally, the turnover frequency of CO2 conversion is correlated with the concentration of basic sites, and the strong metal-support interaction and confinement effect of SBA-15 can suppress metal sintering, ensuring good stability.
