Modulating surface properties of Mn-Fe nanocube-like catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate for effective benzalkonium chloride degradation

Yuwei Xue et al.

Summary: Etched MnFe nanocubes (E-MnFe NC) with cubic-like structures were synthesized as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for the degradation of Benzalkonium chloride (BAC). The E-MnFe NC/PMS system achieved over 99% BAC degradation with a mineralization efficiency of 59.8% in 60 minutes. The main contributors in the oxidation process were identified as SO4 center dot  and HO center dot, and the transformation of surface charge and hydrophobic properties boosted BAC adsorption while oxygen vacancies enhanced electron transfer efficiency. Furthermore, the degradation pathway of BAC was proposed based on density functional theory (DFT) analysis and GC-MS results. Overall, this work provides valuable references for the degradation of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) using Fe-Mn catalysts via SR-AOP.

Infantile Internal and External Exposure to Neonicotinoid Insecticides: A Comparison of Levels across Various Sources

Henglin Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the exposure of infants in South China to neonicotinoid insecticides (NEOs). The results showed that infants had detectable levels of NEOs in urine and blood samples, breast milk, infant formula, and tap water. The concentrations of specific NEOs varied in different samples, with dinotefuran and imidacloprid being the most abundant in urine, blood, breast milk, infant formula, and tap water. Older infants had higher NEO exposure than younger infants. Blood samples had higher concentrations of NEOs compared to urine samples, indicating that NEOs readily enter the bloodstream. Breast-fed infants had higher exposure levels than formula-fed infants. The study also found that external sources contributed to the majority of NEO exposure in infants.

Facet-Dependent Catalytic Activity of MnFe Prussian Blue Analogues in Peroxymonosulfate-Activated System for Efficient Degradation of Acetamiprid

Ruonan Guo et al.

Summary: MnFe Prussian blue analogues (MnFe PBAs) were fabricated and used as catalysts for the degradation of acetamiprid with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as an oxidant. The most active facets for PMS activation were found to be MnFe PBAs (200) due to their superior chemisorption affinity and electron-transfer ability. The study demonstrated that Mn(III) played a crucial role in adjusting the electron density between Fe and Mn, leading to the high activation performance of MnFe PBAs (200).

Constructing magnetically separable manganese-based spinel ferrite from spent ternary lithium-ion batteries for efficient degradation of bisphenol A via peroxymonosulfate activation

Jianxing Liang et al.

Summary: A magnetically separable manganese-based spinel ferrite (MFO-LIBs) synthesized from spent ternary lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) shows enhanced degradation activity for bisphenol A (BPA) through peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. The improvement in activity is attributed to the doping of metals from spent LIBs, resulting in structural and surface property changes. The MFO-LIBs/PMS system exhibits excellent performance under high-salinity, humic acid, and alkaline conditions. The material can be easily separated and has wide applicability and regeneration ability. Moreover, the cost of BPA degradation is lower compared to other spinel ferrite activator/PMS systems.
