Porous g-C3N4 modified with phenanthroline diamide for efficient and ultrafast adsorption of palladium from simulated high level liquid waste

Yizhi Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a hierarchically porous g-C3N4 adsorbent with high selectivity and efficient adsorption for palladium ion (Pd(ii)) was developed. The adsorbent demonstrated quick adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacity for Pd(ii) in HNO3 medium. It was also used to separate Pd and Ru from simulated high level liquid waste (HLLW). This research not only introduces a novel species with superior adsorbent capability for selective recovery of palladium, but also reveals a potential strategy for the development of robust nanomaterials for nuclear waste cleanup.

Recovery and removal of rare earth elements from mine wastewater using synthesized bio-nanoparticles derived from Bacillus cereus

Qiuting Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, bio-nanoparticles (BC@FeNPs-EPS) were successfully synthesized and used to efficiently remove and recover rare earth elements (REEs) from mine wastewater. The removal efficiency of BC@FeNPs-EPS was consistently higher than the three constituent components alone. SEM, XPS, and Zeta potential measurements confirmed the mechanisms of surface complexation and ion exchange for REEs removal. The material also demonstrated high removal efficiency for Eu (III), Tb (III), and Ce (III) in real mine wastewaters.

Highly selective recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater by modifying kaolin with phosphoric acid

Kaibo Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, a phosphoric acid modified kaolin (P-K) adsorbent was prepared for the selective recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mine wastewater. The adsorption of REEs by P-K followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 19.82 mg/g at 50 celcius. P-K showed extremely high selectivity for REEs, with a recovery rate of more than 90% in original mine wastewater and negligible adsorption of calcium, magnesium, and ammonia nitrogen. P-K also demonstrated the potential for concentration and elution of REEs in industrial effluents.

Magnetic Covalent Organic Framework Composites for Wastewater Remediation

Juan Yang et al.

Summary: Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with desirable properties have been widely used in various fields. However, their practical application in environmental remediation is limited due to the disadvantages of powder form COFs. To overcome this, the fabrication of magnetic COFs (MCOFs) has gained attention. This review summarizes different strategies for fabricating MCOFs, discusses their applications as outstanding adsorbents for contaminant removal, and highlights the importance of structural parameters. The challenges and prospects of MCOFs in this field are also provided.

Yizhi Chen et al.

Summary: SiO2@Fe3O4-DAPhen nanocomposites with strong adsorption capacity and excellent tolerance were synthesized for Th(IV) removal in acidic solutions. The interaction between Th(IV) and SiO2@Fe3O4-DAPhen was found to be mainly through chemical coordination and electrostatic attraction. The nanocomposites exhibited fast adsorption kinetics and high adsorption capacity, making them a promising choice for efficient Th(IV) removal. Moreover, they showed good selectivity, tolerance to salinity, and resistance to radiation.

Novel benzylphosphate-based covalent porous organic polymers for the effective capture of rare earth elements from aqueous solutions

Seenu Ravi et al.

Summary: This study introduces two novel benzylphosphate-based covalent porous organic polymers (BPOP-1 and BPOP-2) for efficiently recovering heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) with high adsorption capacities and superior adsorption kinetics. The materials exhibit unusual crystalline nature, large surface area, hierarchical pore structure, and exceptional cyclic adsorption/desorption properties. The introduction of phosphate functionality into a robust porous polymer backbone with high surface area is a promising strategy for selective HREEs capture from wastewater.

Summary: The demand for valuable metals is increasing due to the depletion of natural resources and international conflicts. Recycling metals using porous materials, such as carbon-based and nanoparticle-based adsorbents, is an advanced method being explored. Metal-organic and covalent organic frameworks show promise for metal recovery, but effluent pollution needs to be addressed. While major adsorption mechanisms are understood, spatial nanoconfinement mechanisms are still poorly known.

Recovery of rare earth elements from electronic waste by diffusion dialysis

Z. Hammache et al.

Summary: The recovery of Nd and Pr from end-of-life computer hard disk drives using diffusion dialysis shows great potential, with up to 15% of boron extraction achieved in 6 hours. The membrane selectivity between boron and REEs depends on membrane structure, water uptake ability, and surface charge, as well as the composition of the leachate. The CTA/PEI/TDDA membrane exhibited the highest B/REE selectivity factors, indicating its effectiveness in separating boron from Nd and Pr.
