In situ monitoring of dynamic behavior of La-doped CuCl2/c-Al2O3 catalyst in ethylene oxychlorination

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The oxidation state of Cu species in ethylene oxychlorination is closely related to its catalytic performance. CuCl2 and CuCl are the primary active sites in the reduction and oxidation steps, respectively. The distribution of active sites is determined by the kinetic equilibrium of reduction, oxidation, and hydrochlorination rates. In this study, in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and operando UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy were used to study the dynamic changes of Cu active sites in La-doped CuCl2/c-Al2O3 catalysts. A higher CuCl2 concentration significantly improves the activity, EDC selectivity, and stability. The presence of La enhances the reducibility of CuCl2 and modifies the catalytic performance rather than directly participating in the redox cycle. This study provides a deeper understanding of the role of active species and promoters in CuCl2/c-Al2O3 catalysts for ethylene oxychlorination.

Atomic Cu-N-P-C Active Complex with Integrated Oxidation and Chlorination for Improved Ethylene Oxychlorination

Hongfei Ma et al.

Summary: Fine reconstructing the chemical environment of Cu-N-C SAC with Cu-P moiety modulation achieves superior performance in ethylene oxychlorination. The Cu-NPC catalyst exhibits Cu site activity four times higher than P-free Cu-NC catalyst and 25 times higher than Ce-promoted CuCl2/Al2O3 catalyst. The fine construction with another heteroatom provides a theoretical framework for catalyzing ethylene oxychlorination and expands the application of carbon-based SACs in heterogeneous catalysis.

Facet-Induced Strong Metal Chloride-Support Interaction over CuCl2/γ-Al2O3 Catalyst to Enhance Ethylene Oxychlorination Performance

Hongfei Ma et al.

Summary: Supported transition metal oxides, chlorides, carbides, and so forth (MXn) play a critical role in redox processes as catalysts. In this study, the nature of the interaction between monolayer CuCl2 and gamma-Al2O3, and its catalytic consequence induced by support facets in ethylene oxychlorination were illustrated. The effects of the interaction between CuCl2 and different exposed facets of gamma-Al2O3 (110) and (100) on catalytic performance were demonstrated through kinetic and theoretical studies, combined with operando spectroscopy. The catalyst with Al2O3 (110) showed better performance in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability.

Understanding of K and Mg co-promoter effect in ethylene oxychlorination by operando UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy

Hongfei Ma et al.

Summary: A comprehensive kinetic study was conducted on CuCl2/gamma-Al2O3-based catalysts to investigate the co-promoter effect in ethylene oxychlorination. The promoter effects were found to influence the Cu2+ reduction or Cu+ oxidation in the catalytic cycle. K-doped catalyst greatly increased the oxidation step rate, while Mg-doped catalyst enhanced the reduction step rate. Co-doped K and Mg catalyst showed intermediate effects on both reaction rate and Cu oxidation state. Steady-state reactions closely matched the rates predicted by the rate-diagram.

Prediction and Tuning of the Defects in the Redox Catalysts: Ethylene Oxychlorination

Endre Fenes et al.

Summary: A general method is presented for building a new kinetic model of the redox reaction cycle by combining kinetics of reduction- and oxidation steps to predict the formation of defects and reaction products in solid catalysts. The defect concentration can be adjusted by manipulating the relative rates of reduction- and oxidation steps.

Kinetic modeling of dynamic changing active sites in a Mars-van Krevelen type reaction: Ethylene oxychlorination on K-doped CuCl2/Al2O3

Hongfei Ma et al.

Summary: A kinetic model considering the dynamic nature of active sites in Mars-van Krevelen type reactions was developed to predict the evolution of reactant and product composition, as well as CuCl2 concentration in the solid catalyst. By combining transient and steady-state kinetic modeling, the model successfully described the transient response of reduction and oxidation steps, as well as the reaction at steady state under different conditions, providing a better understanding of Mars-van Krevelen type reactions.

Insights of the Dynamic Copper Active Sites in Ethylene Oxychlorination Studied by the Multivariate UV-vis-NIR Resolution Kinetic Approach

Hongfei Ma et al.

Summary: The study used UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy to investigate the dynamic changes of copper active sites in CuCl2/gamma-Al2O3-based catalyst during ethylene oxychlorination. Various Cu species such as CuCl2, CuCl, and Cu2OCl2 were identified for the first time, and their transient changes and contribution in the catalytic cycle were accurately imaged using MCR analysis, correlating with catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability. The time-resolved spectra and their correlation with catalytic performance provide better insights into the dynamic nature of active sites and their role in the reaction.
