Axial coordination tuning Fe single-atom catalysts for boosting H2O2 activation

Haoyang Fu et al.

Summary: This study reports a strategy to regulate the coordination status of single-atom catalysts (SACs) by introducing iron phthalocyanine on N-doped graphene to achieve a Fenton-like SAC containing an axial five-coordinated configuration (Fe-N5). The Fe-N5 SAC significantly modulates the electronic state of Fe atoms and lowers the activation energy for the production of center dot OH. Additionally, it shortens the diffusion distance of center dot OH by establishing a dual-site reaction mechanism with enriched pyridinic N sites, resulting in exceptional Fenton activity.

Jun Gong et al.

Summary: Interlayer engineering is crucial for enhancing the performance of two-dimensional materials in catalysis. In this study, GQD/Co-MoS2 was successfully synthesized and showed excellent long-term stability and catalytic performance. The outstanding performance can be attributed to the enlarged interlayer spacing and electronic coupling at the van der Waals heterojunctions between GQDs and Co-doped MoS2.

Single-atom Cu catalyst in a zirconium-based metal-organic framework for biomass conversion

Yushan Wu et al.

Summary: A single-atom catalyst, Cu@UiO-66(COOH)(2), was prepared by a simple and efficient solvothermal strategy, where Cu atoms were coordinated to the defect sites of SBUs in a Zr-based MOF UiO-66(COOH)(2). This catalyst showed high activity for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to gamma-valerolactone through catalytic transfer hydrogenation process, achieving a GVL yield of 96.7%. The excellent catalytic performance can be attributed to the site isolation and uniform distribution of single Cu atoms combined with the presence of acid sites in the MOF.

Directional electron transfer in single-atom cobalt nanozyme for enhanced photo-Fenton-like reaction

Shiang Liu et al.

Summary: In this research, enzyme-mimicking single-atom catalyst was created by incorporating Co-N4 sites into graphite carbon nitride. The catalytic activity and selectivity of the EMSA-Co sites were similar to natural enzymes, and they showed excellent performance in activating persulfate under visible light. The EMSA-Co-g-C3N4 + PS + Vis system exhibited a BPA degradation rate 33 times faster than the g-C3N4 + PS + Vis system. The high reactivity and selectivity of EMSA-Co sites led to efficient generation of radical species, resulting in the rapid elimination of various organic pollutants. Mechanistic studies showed that the directional ultrafast electron transfer in EMSA-Co nanozyme accelerated the redox circulation of Co single sites, enhancing their performance in photo-Fenton-like reactions. This study opens up new possibilities for the use of robust and efficient enzyme-like single-atom catalysts in environmental remediation.

Engineering d-p Orbital Hybridization in Single-Atom Metal-Embedded Three-Dimensional Electrodes for Li-S Batteries

Zhiyuan Han et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the d-p orbital hybridization between single-atom metals and sulfur species can serve as a descriptor for understanding the catalytic activity of SACs in Li-S batteries. Transition metals with lower atomic numbers, such as titanium, have been found to effectively bind lithium polysulfides and catalyze their electrochemical reaction. Single-atom metal catalysts embedded in three-dimensional electrodes prepared through a nitrogen coordination approach show high catalytic activity and low catalyst loading for improved sulfur utilization in Li-S batteries.
