Supported rhenium catalysts for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid derivatives: limits and potential

Riccardo Bacchiocchi et al.

Summary: By investigating the catalytic activity of various Re-based catalysts, we confirmed the crucial role of support acidity in promoting the ring-opening of γ-valerolactone (GVL) and its consecutive reduction to valeric compounds. Under optimized conditions, bimetallic Re-Ru-O/HZSM-5 yielded methyl valerate (MV) and valeric acid (VA) with high productivity. However, we found that Re-based catalysts undergo leaching of the active phase in the presence of carboxylic acids, limiting their recyclability.

Ru-MnOx Interaction for Efficient Hydrodeoxygenation of Levulinic Acid and Its Derivatives

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: The interaction between Ru and MnOx was found to enhance the hydrodeoxygenation of levulinic acid (LA) to 2-butanol with high activity and yield. This catalyst also showed efficient removal of hydroxymethyl groups from lactones and diols. The strong Ru-MnOx interaction facilitated the reduction of Ru oxide to Ru0 and Mn oxide to Mn2+, creating metal and Lewis acid sites that promoted LA hydrodeoxygenation. The hydrodeoxygenation activity of the Ru-MnOx catalyst correlated linearly with [Mn2+]ln([Ru0]).

The effect of silica oxide support on the catalytic activity of nickel-molybdenum bimetallic catalyst toward ethanol steam reforming for hydrogen production

Mohamed A. Elharati et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of molybdenum promoter and silica oxide support morphology on the performance of NiMo bimetallic catalysts in ethanol steam reforming (ESR). The results show that NiMo catalysts supported on SBA-15 exhibit superior catalytic activity and coking resistance compared to those supported on commercial SiO2. The mesoporous structure of SBA-15 obstructs carbon formation, leading to improved coking resistance. Additionally, the Mo promoter enhances the interaction between NiMo nanoparticles and SiO2, preventing their agglomeration and promoting better dispersion and inhibition of sintering. The NiMo catalysts supported on SBA-15 demonstrate high H2 yield and carbon conversion with excellent stability in ESR.

From ethene to propene (ETP) on tailored silica-alumina supports with isolated Ni(ii) sites: uncovering the importance of surface nickel aluminate sites and the carbon-pool mechanism

Zixuan Chen et al.

Summary: Catalysts with well-defined isolated Ni(ii) surface sites have been prepared on three different silica-based supports. The Ni catalysts with a higher density of strong Bronsted acid sites (BAS) show higher initial activity and productivity in the ethene-to-propene conversion. Propene productivity is closely related to the concentration of C-8 aromatics, suggesting the formation of propene via a carbon-pool mechanism. Furthermore, the deactivation of catalysts with Ni(ii) sites on AlOx can be reversed by calcination, while catalysts with Ni silicate or aluminosilicate sites irreversibly deactivate by forming Ni nanoparticles.
