Understanding and mitigating noise in trained deep neural networks

Nadezhda Semenova et al.

Summary: Deep neural networks have unlocked new applications previously reserved for higher human intelligence, leveraging computing power from special purpose hardware. However, the emulation of neural networks by binary computing leads to unsustainable energy consumption and slow speed. Research shows that noise accumulation in deep neural networks with noisy nonlinear neurons is generally limited, and noise can be completely suppressed when neuron activation functions have a slope smaller than unity.

Multiplexing noise induces synchronization in multilayer networks

E. Rybalova et al.

Summary: We numerically studied the spatio-temporal behavior of a two-layer multiplex network with modulated interlayer coupling noise. Our research found that low-frequency multiplexing noise can generate solitary states in the network and reveal the special temporal dynamics of these solitary nodes. Furthermore, it was discovered that complete and near-complete synchronization between layers can be achieved under certain noise characteristics.

Multiplexing-based control of stochastic resonance

Vladimir V. Semenov et al.

Summary: This paper explores the control effect of multiplexing on noise-induced dynamics of multilayer networks in the regime of stochastic resonance, revealing that multiplexing can suppress or enhance stochastic resonance effects and exhibit resonant characteristics. With an increasing number of coupled layers, the impact of stochastic resonance becomes more pronounced.

Control of coherence resonance in multiplex neural networks

Maria Masoliver et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamics of two weakly and mutually coupled neuronal populations in a multiplexed ring configuration. It shows that appropriate levels of noise in layer 1 can induce coherence resonance (CR), anti-coherence resonance (ACR), and inverse stochastic resonance (ISR) in layer 2 with weak inter-layer coupling, even with a small number of randomly distributed inter-layer links. The results are applicable to both small and large neuronal populations.

Interplay between solitary states and chimeras in multiplex neural networks

E. V. Rybalova et al.

Summary: In this study, we numerically investigated the spatiotemporal dynamics and synchronization of a heterogeneous two-layer multiplex network consisting of FitzHugh-Nagumo neurons. We found competitive behavior between solitary states and chimeras in the transition to synchronous regime with the introduction of interlayer coupling. By using different types of interlayer coupling, we systematically studied synchronization between different layers.

A bio-inspired bistable recurrent cell allows for long-lasting memory

Nicolas Vecoven et al.

Summary: Inspired by the bistability of biological neurons, embedding RNNs with a new bistable biologically-inspired recurrent cell at the cellular level significantly improves performance on time series requiring long memory. Even with only cellular connections (all recurrent connections from neurons to themselves), this improvement is achieved.

Asymmetry-induced order in multilayer networks

Everton S. Medeiros et al.

Summary: Symmetries naturally occur in real-world networks and can significantly influence the observed dynamics. Breaking symmetry in network interactions can induce regularity in network solutions. Asymmetries can rescue a system from chaotic oscillations by establishing stable periodic orbits and equilibria.

Coherence resonance in neuronal populations: Mean-field versus network model

Emre Baspinar et al.

Summary: The study investigates coherence resonance in populations of FHN neurons through numerical and analytical methods, finding that coupling strength and noise intensity impact the phenomenon. Results show good agreement between mean-field and network models in the globally coupled case.
