How distinct functional insular subdivisions mediate interacting neurocognitive systems

Haichao Zhao et al.

Summary: Recent neurocognitive models suggest that the insula plays a vital role in the interoceptive awareness system, regulating two interconnected neurocognitive systems associated with the posterior insula (PI) and the anterior insula. This study used a multimodal approach to investigate the neuro-cognitive association between insular connectivity and cognitive performance, and the findings supported the theoretical roles of different subinsular functionality in the overall operation of cognitive systems.

Insular dichotomy in the implicit detection of emotions in human faces

Maud Frot et al.

Summary: The functional roles of the posterior and anterior sections of the insula differ, with the posterior section mainly connected to somato-sensory and motor areas, and the anterior section connected to frontal, limbic, and cingulate regions. The posterior section responds equally to all types of faces, while the anterior section only responds to emotional faces. Both sections of the insula are activated in parallel via distinct functional routes.

Resting-state functional heterogeneity of the right insula contributes to pain sensitivity

Daniel Vereb et al.

Summary: This study investigated how spatial features of insular resting state functional organization correspond to individual pain sensitivity. The results showed significant associations between spatial features of dominant connectopies in the right insula and thermal as well as composite pain sensitivity, while the left insular gradient was not significantly associated with pain thresholds. This highlights the functional relevance of gradient-like insular organization in pain processing and suggests that considering individual variations in insular connectopy might contribute to understanding neural mechanisms behind pain.

Functional MRI-Specific Alterations in Salience Network in Mild Cognitive Impairment: An ALE Meta-Analysis

Yu Song et al.

Summary: This study found specific functional alterations in the salience network in patients with MCI and aMCI, including decreased activity in certain brain regions, increased functional connectivity, and decreased regional homogeneity. In addition, interactions of the salience network with other networks were observed, providing new insights for potential imaging biomarkers for MCI or aMCI.
