The Application of Diffusion Kurtosis Imaging on the Heterogeneous White Matter in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis

Summary: This study used diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) to evaluate the microstructural damage in different white matter areas in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients and found that the damage varied across different brain regions and was correlated with clinical and cognitive status.

In vivo detection of damage in multiple sclerosis cortex and cortical lesions using NODDI

Paolo Preziosa et al.

Summary: This study characterized microstructural abnormalities in multiple sclerosis (MS) cortex using neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI). Results showed significant neurite loss in MS normal-appearing (NA) cortex and further neurite density reduction in cortical lesions (CLs), indicating a simplification of neurite complexity. NODDI is relevant for investigating the heterogeneous pathology of the MS cortex in vivo.

Myelin and axon pathology in multiple sclerosis assessed by myelin water and multi-shell diffusion imaging

Reza Rahmanzadeh et al.

Summary: Damage to both myelin and axons in multiple sclerosis is extensive, both in lesions and normal-appearing tissue. Certain types of lesions exhibit more severe damage to myelin and axons than others, and progressive patients show more extensive axon/myelin damage in the cortex compared to relapsing-remitting patients. Myelin and axon pathology in lesions is associated with disability in patients with clinical deficits and global measures of neuroaxonal damage.

Brain microstructural and metabolic alterations detected in vivo at onset of the first demyelinating event

Sara Collorone et al.

Summary: Through the use of multi-parametric quantitative MRI, early multiple sclerosis patients were found to have alterations in neurite orientation dispersion and total sodium concentration in normal brain tissues, which may be related to the disease pathophysiology. Differences in neurite density, orientation dispersion, and total sodium concentration were observed in white and grey matter regions between patients and healthy controls, suggesting clinically relevant pathology.

Summary: The study found that cortical diffusion and thalamic volume are closely associated with walking and cognitive performance in patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), and are highly affected by the presence of white matter lesions.
