Ultrasonic-assisted soldering of sapphire through metallic transition layers of Al and Zn using Sn-xZn-2Al solder alloys

Xinran Ma et al.

Summary: Ultrasonic-assisted soldering, particularly for the joining of ceramics, shows promise in the electrical industry. This study investigated the soldering of sapphire under a short ultrasonic action using Sn-xZn-2Al solder alloys. The microstructures of the interfacial transition layers were analyzed, revealing the formation of metallic transition layers and three distinct interfacial structures. The selective and asynchronous adsorption of Al and Zn in the solder alloys during ultrasonic action resulted in the formation of Al atomic layers, Zn enrichment layers, and Zn nanocrystalline clusters. These transition structures strengthened the interfacial bonding and achieved joints with high shear strength.

Multi-scan picosecond laser welding of non-optical contact soda lime glass

Xianshi Jia et al.

Summary: Nowadays, ultrafast laser welding is widely used in chip labs, microelectronic systems, and micro-medical implantable devices. The challenge lies in welding non-optical contact transparent materials, which has been addressed by spatially and/or temporally shaping the laser under single scanning. In this study, a multi-scan picosecond laser welding method is adopted to weld non-optical soda lime glass with a 5 μm gap, achieving a welding region of 12×1 mm² and a welding strength of 6.5 MPa. The optimal welding parameters are determined and the proposed method offers a new technical solution for practical application of ultrafast laser welding.

Study of the dynamics of material removal processes in combined pulse laser drilling of alumina ceramic

Xianshi Jia et al.

Summary: Combined pulse laser (CPL) is a reliable tool for high-quality and high-efficiency material processing. The nanosecond laser can improve the drilling performance of the millisecond laser by increasing the laser absorption or improving the sputtering of the melt. However, the dynamics of material removal processes in CPL drilling have not been systematically investigated.

Microstructure evolution and interfacial bonding mechanisms of ultrasonically soldered sapphire/Al dissimilar joints using Sn-based solders

Jiale Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, sapphire and 5A06 Al were ultrasonically soldered using different solders, and the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. The interfacial bonding mechanism of different solders was analyzed, and it was found that the use of composite solders can eliminate cracks in the solder joint and form a more uniform solder seam structure.

Triple-Scale Superhydrophobic Surface with Excellent Anti-Icing and Icephobic Performance via Ultrafast Laser Hybrid Fabrication

Rui Pan et al.

Summary: A new triple-scale micro/nanostructured superhydrophobic surface designed via ultrafast laser ablation and chemical oxidation exhibits excellent anti-icing and icephobic properties, with low ice adhesion strength and outstanding resistance to high humidity. The surface structure combines periodical microcone arrays, densely grown nanograsses, and dispersedly distributed microflowers, providing good Cassie state stability and preventing ice and water accumulation effectively.

Crystallization behaviour of 25Bi2O3-75B2O3 glass braze and strengthening mechanism of crystallization-reinforced sapphire/25Bi2O3-75B2O3/sapphire joints

Wei Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, borate based glass was successfully used as a braze to join sapphire, demonstrating outstanding glass-forming ability and excellent wettability on the surface of sapphire. The joint strength varied with different brazing temperatures and times, with the maximum strength achieved at 700 degrees C for 20 minutes. The research also found that the different joining parameters affected the joint structure and mechanical performance.

Bonding and strengthening mechanism on ultrasonic-assisted soldering of sapphire using Sn-3.5Ag-4Al solder

Yan Xu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the successful joining of sapphire with a Sn-3.5Ag-4Al solder using fast ultrasonic-assisted soldering technique. The enhancement of shear strength in the joints was attributed to the formation of a transition layer of amorphous Al2O3 at the interface, along with the presence of Al enrichment layer and Ag3Al2 phases. These structures contributed to the strong interfacial bonding, ultimately improving the mechanical properties of the joints.

High-quality welding of glass by a femtosecond laser assisted with silver nanofilm

Cong Wang et al.

Summary: A femtosecond laser welding method assisted by silver nanofilm for quartz glass is proposed to improve the welding strength of glass, and the welding strength was increased nearly 20% compared with direct femtosecond laser welding. Additionally, the proposed method can realize the welding process even at a lower laser power than the welding threshold.
