Constructing hierarchical Ti3SiC2 layer and carbon nanotubes on SiC fibers for enhanced electromagnetic wave absorption

Yangjun Zou et al.

Summary: Hybrid fibers with a double shell structure (Ti3SiC2 and carbon nanotubes (CNTs)) were successfully synthesized on silicon carbide fiber (SiCf) using molten salt method and floating catalytic chemical vapor deposition. The coating of Ti3SiC2 and CNTs on the hybrid fibers allowed for modulation of the dielectric permittivity. The resulting CNT@Ti3SiC2@SiCf showed excellent electromagnetic wave absorption performance due to the combination of conductive and dielectric losses.

Phase-field simulation of microscale crack propagation/deflection in SiCf/SiC composites with weak interphase

Jin Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscale toughening mechanism, crack propagation, and stress-strain response of unidirectional SiCf/SiC composites with h-BN interphase under transverse and longitudinal tension using a micromechanical phase field (PF) method and representative volume element. The calculated results are in good agreement with experimental results. Different toughening mechanisms, such as fiber pull-out, crack deflection, and interphase debonding, are observed depending on the interphase strength. The longitudinal tensile strength of SiCf/SiC composites increases with decreasing interphase strength, and a weak interphase is required for significant crack deflection. The transverse tensile strength reaches a maximum with increasing interphase thickness between 0.25-0.5 μm.

Characterization of BN interface and its effect on the mechanical behavior of SiCf/SiC composites

Jiajia Sun et al.

Summary: The boron nitride (BN) interface of SiC fiber-reinforced SiC matrix (SiCf/SiC) composites was fabricated using chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) with BCl3 and NH3 as precursor. The microstructure and chemical composition of the BN interface were studied. The influence of coating thickness on the tensile behavior of SiCf/SiC composites was evaluated. The BN interface synthesized at 800 degrees C displayed a low degree of crystallization and a quasi-isotropic microstructure. The optimal thickness of the BN interface was found to be about 670 nm.

Characterization and Modeling Damage and Fracture of Prepreg-MI SiC/SiC Composites under Tensile Loading at Room Temperature

Hu Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, the damage and fracture in SiC/SiC composites were investigated through AE signals analysis. A micromechanical damage-based constitutive relationship was developed to predict the nonlinear behavior and hysteresis loops. The associations between tensile behavior, hysteresis loops, and internal damage evolution with fracture were revealed through experimental and predicted results.

In-situ formation of Ti3SiC2 interphase in SiCf/SiC composites by molten salt synthesis

Yang Jinsong et al.

Summary: A titanium silicon carbide (Ti3SiC2) film was successfully synthesized using a molten salt synthesis route on a polymer-derived SiC fiber substrate. The film consists of two layers of Ti3SiC2 with different grain features. The synthesis mechanism was discussed based on the thickness of the pre-deposited pyrolytic carbon (PyC) coating and the batching ratio of the mixed powder. The obtained Ti3SiC2 film was used as an interphase to prepare SiC fiber reinforced SiC matrix composites, which exhibited a flexural strength of 460 ± 20 MPa and a fracture toughness of 16.8 ± 2.4 MPa·m^(1/2).
