Thermal cycling behavior of bi-layer Yb2Si2O7/SiC EBC-coated Cf/SiC composites in burner rig tests

Sian Chen et al.

Summary: The study shows that the bi-layer Yb2Si2O7/SiC coating can significantly improve the oxidation resistance of C-f/SiC samples in high-temperature gas flow environment, delaying the oxidation process. However, after more than 20 thermal cycles, the performance of the coating starts to decrease due to the formation of penetrating cracks.

High-entropy (Y0.2 Gd0.2 Dy0.2 Er0.2 Yb0.2 )2Hf2O7 ceramic: A promising thermal barrier coating material

Longkang Cong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel high entropy hafnate (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 was synthesized and characterized for potential use as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material in gas turbines. The (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 demonstrated excellent phase stability, chemical compatibility with Al2O3, and lower thermal conductivity compared to other TBC materials. These results suggest that (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 is a promising candidate for the next generation TBC materials.

The effects of mixing multi-component HLW glasses on spinel crystal size

C. E. Lonergan et al.

Summary: The study shows that the size of spinel crystals in high-level waste glass can be controlled by using chromium oxide and/or noble metal concentrations, improving the acceptability in the melter. Allowing higher concentrations of spinel-forming waste components in the waste glass enables higher waste loading, increasing plant operational flexibility, and potentially protecting melter walls against corrosion.

Optical temperature sensing characteristics of Gd2Ti2O7: Sm3+, Tm3+ phosphors

Yuange Liu et al.

Summary: In this experiment, Gd2Ti2O7: x% Sm3+, 1% Tm3+ (x = 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1) optical temperature sensing materials were synthesized using the hydrothermal method with urea as the precipitant. XRD analysis confirmed the face-centered cubic phase pyrochlore structure of the prepared samples, while FE-SEM images revealed their irregularly spherical morphology. The temperature-dependent emission spectrum measurements indicated that Tm3+ exhibited significant thermal quenching, while Sm3+ showed a slower thermal quenching trend, leading to significant variations in their fluorescence intensity ratios (FIRs) with temperature. By comparing different samples, it was found that increasing Sm3+ concentration resulted in higher absolute sensitivity but decreasing relative sensitivity. The maximum absolute sensitivity was 0.0686 K-1 (483 K, 1% Sm3+, 1% Tm3+), and the maximum relative sensitivity was 3.1% K-1 (297.7 K, 0.1% Sm3+, 1% Tm3+). Additionally, the luminescence color of the Gd2Ti2O7: 0.1% Sm3+, 1% Tm3+ phosphors continuously changed from blue to orange-red with increasing temperature, allowing for rough estimation of temperature changes based on luminescence color. The temperature cycle test demonstrated good repeatability of temperature measurement using FIR. Overall, Gd2Ti2O7: Sm3+, Tm3+ phosphors showed promising application prospects.

Grain size effects on the aqueous durability of Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics as high-level radioactive wastes matrix and its leaching mechanism

Kui Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effect of grain size on the aqueous durability of Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics, finding that normalized leaching rates decrease with larger grain sizes. Analysis showed hydrolysis reactions occurred during leaching, forming Gd(OH)3 and Zr(OH)4, and samples exhibited slight lattice contraction post-leaching, which decreased with larger crystal grain sizes. The most significant elemental distribution change post-leaching was observed in samples with 5 nm grain size.

Summary: The pyrochlore-structure type and its derivatives show promising potential as materials for immobilizing actinides and fission products, but the complexity of their compositions poses a significant challenge for experimental durability testing. In this study, machine learning was employed to identify key materials parameters influencing chemical durability, allowing for accurate prediction of leaching behaviors and enabling rapid evaluation of new compositions. The results demonstrate the feasibility of combining informatics and experiments to accelerate materials design for effective nuclear waste management.

Thermal cycling behavior of La2Zr2O7/Yb2Si2O7/SiC coated PIP Cf/SiC composites under burner rig tests

Pengju Chen et al.

Summary: Ytterbium disilicate and lanthanum zirconate powders were synthesized by solvent gel method. A tri-layer La2Zr2O7/Yb2Si2O7/SiC EBCs was prepared on the surface of C-f/SiC composites, showing better oxidation resistance compared to a bi-layer Yb2Si2O7/SiC coating. The crack deflection phenomenon in the tri-layer coating can largely avoid the formation of penetrating cracks and improve the oxidation resistance of the coating, resulting in only a small amount of coating falling off after corrosion in high-speed and high-temperature gas.
